Re: Another V8 bike

Good advice on the belt guard. I have made a makeshift one but left it off for the pic cos it's proper ugly. Keeps my fingers on the ends of my hands where they belong though.

Re: Another V8 bike

Lot of work done lately but lots of fiddly jobs with very little to show for the time spent like finish welding pieces and planning exhaust routing while cutting up various mandrel bends... More importantly though I finally bough me a lathe! https://www.instagram.com/p/BfCw65EFefI/ 1908 Drummond Bro...

Re: Another V8 bike

Machining from a solid block is awesome if you can swing it but CNC gear is a little out of my reach. To pay someone else to do it is also going to get REALLY spendy. Casting is actually fairly simple and results in very little material waste as only the mating surfaces and bearing/shaft housing act...

Re: Another V8 bike

I'm running a single gear for now with plans on adding a 2 speed box in the future incorporating the quartermaster clutch. I've designed some patterns for the gearbox cases but I'm still having technical issues with my furnace which makes attempts to cast anything a little hit and miss. It bleeds a ...

Re: Another V8 bike

Blowing up an engine is the best excuse to build a new bike! My Dad raced a CB400 with the PCRA for a while. He wanted to rebuild the motor which was close to stock but knew he'd get in trouble for 'wasting' money on it. His solution was to flog it mercilessly in the hope it would let go, giving him...

Re: Another V8 bike

I'd REALLY like to get out there to watch this year but work and family commitments mean that simply won't happen. There is absolutely no way the bike will be ready and I hate rushing things and producing crappy work so it just takes as long as it takes. 2019 should be plenty of time though. I too w...

Re: Another V8 bike

I was actually a little confused about the 3000+ vs 5000+ thing. I saw the records for 5000+ but noticed it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the rules with everything over 3000+ landing in the one box. Either way it causes me no concern at all. I'll just be happy to get the thing running and...

Re: Another V8 bike

The offer is very much appreciated and I may just take you up on that yet. Also I was just reading through the rule book to clarify a few things and it occurred to me that our bikes may end up running in the same class. I'm not entirely sure as the LS motor in yours is MUCH larger but the rules seem...

Re: Another V8 bike

No TIG sadly. My little cigweld inverter is able to be upgraded to a basic TIG with the addition of a different torch and a bottle and regulator but since discovering the new thinner rods which are available I've put it off for the moment. Welding with standard 2.5mm rods in the 80-90A bracket tends...

Re: Another V8 bike

They're not laser cut but I'll take that as a compliment :D . It was all done with a 100mm cutting wheel, a holesaw and a selection of files and all welding is done with a good old fashioned 130A stick. I bent the plates with a firmly anchored vice, a BIG shifting spanner and an even bigger lever. D...

Re: Another V8 bike

Some more progress on this one and a new way to try and get some pictures up. I'm attempting to use imgbb and I have no idea if it will work but here goes... This shows the newest incarnation of the frame with the tapered backbone bolted to a plate on the rear section. This was made by taking a piec...

Re: Another V8 bike

Progress is still coming on this one although I am revisiting the frame design again because I just wasn't happy with it. I had real concerns about the structure securing the steering head tube to the front cylinder head and the bracing that was to go in over the top of the motor was going to be qui...

Re: theTRUTH

I'm using a near identical design for mine (currently getting the pieces made up) but I've incorporated a lip just before the spline to stop the flywheel/sprocket carrier moving one way and a tube spacer butted up against the inner sleeve of the end bearing to stop it going the other way and to resi...

Re: theTRUTH

Love the look of the jackshaft. Is the collar for the output sprocket a centre from a clutch disc? and also how is it located on the shaft to stop it wandering sideways?

Re: theTRUTH

Looks good! I just bought the steel I need to make mine from Edcon in Brookvale. They do 1045 medium carbon which is capable of being hardened but it sold unhardened. They do round bar in some BIG diameters too which I haven't seen anywhere else and the price is not much more than mild steel. They w...
