Yeah, good job Chris. Two from two is pretty good. I feel sorry for Cameron McConville. I stopped in at Mount Panorama a while back and did a lap of the track in the family truckster. You're right, the race would be incredibly hard. Just driving round in the car at 60km/h was amazing enough, I could...

I suppose I could always put off my Christmas shopping until the 23rd or 24th! Barring unforeseen circumstance, I'll be there, hopefully with a few pictures of the Celica.

Scrutineering questions

I've read the rulebook and I've read the bit about tech inspection at the salt but still have a few questions pertaining to a new car. How do I get my new car scrutineered or inspected (in Queensland) during the construction phase so that I know it is being built to an acceptable standard and is cla...

short legs

Doc, I checked out the FWD belly tank. The driver must have mighty short legs, that thing's got even less leg room than your beasty. The wheelbase looks like it might be good at motorkhanas too. I wonder how stable it will be at speed. I have a few days off this week so I might actually get some wor...

make it stronger

Don't use aluminium, it will bend under load and do exactly what Doc just described. Do it with several layers of woven mat fibreglass (not chopped strand) but add some Kevlar as well. My only practical experience with Kevlar was a sprint kart seat a mate of mine from Alabama made for me. It was muc...

talking to myself again

Doc, Yeah I probably was talking to myself but I always get insightful responses that way. No rants from Gordon D about it, maybe I've made a terrible mistake after all! Brian, The Celica is an '86 ST162, the first of the front wheel drives. The engine is a '93 model 3VZ-FE which is a cast iron 3 li...

How's the Celica going, Dave?

Slowly! The V6 is out of the Camry and hanging in the engine bay of the Celica. It is a big motor but it fits well enough, albeit a few inches further forward that I would have preferred. Can't help that, I'm not interested in moving the steering rack or the LH lower control arm just to push the mot...

stop whinging and build something!

Gordon, I'm the calmest and most reasonable bloke I know and even I'm getting sick of your pointless whinging. Your cheese-eating, surrender monkey built econo box is NOT a salt car and never will be. The Street Class is gone now so you don't have to worry about us not appreciating your wonderful Cl...

better gloves

So W3stie, I take it you'll be building a AA/BFS for your first salt car? Just make sure you wear better gloves than him!

jacking points

Lynchy, The jack tube idea is a good one and would work well. If you are worried about them dropping out during a run you could always bolt them in inside the car with nyloc nuts (better) or leave them out until the car was up in the air (a bit more fiddly). V8 Supercars use 4 air rams to achieve th...

finally!

Nobody had any skyhooks so I built my own. The Celica engine is now sitting on the ground and the Camry is looking nervous. Two weeks to do a couple of hours work (if you know what you're doing) is pretty hopeless and doesn't bode well for being ready by March. Seems that just lately I've been busie...

what's in a name?

Lynchy, Stay with the Shaguar, it's a great name and well recognised. And the car is dead sexy already, imagine what it'll be like when it's finished. Besides, it gives you and Big Gaz a great excuse to dress up as Austin Powers and wear the stupid false teeth. But only if you bring along a Felicity...

can anyone help?

Avid readers of this forum will know I am finally building a car, an '86 Celica with a turbo V6 Camry engine for F/BGALT and F/BGCC. Might even use nitrous and run the fuel classes too. Unfortunately I'm building it in my backyard. I have a chainblock available but I don't have a frame to support it...

baby, it's cold outside...

Doc, I thought about the dry ice idea but I'm doing this very much on the cheap. Even though I don't like buying cheap tools I figured $20 for a heat gun that might even last longer than this job was better than watching my money evaporate and choke me with the CO2. And it's been so cold here at nig...
