For NHRA & DLRA I'd run a full space frame.
For TAC & WA reg you might only be allowed a roll bar or small cage around the driver using original or repro chassis rails.

I think you're right, mild steel tube is the cheapest and easiest way to make a safe frame.

Reverend, if you're thinking of something like a VZ commodore throttle body (LS whatever they are) they have two return springs in the main shaft.
you have to remove the cap with the sensor and plug on it to get to/see the springs.

I saw the costella streamliner at Bonneville when he was running a twin turbo flathead. Very interesting car, the frame doesn't look too special but when the body goes on its looks like s@x on wheels.

I'm a short way into building a T-Bucket.
