which wheels?
As usual I apologise if this is a stupid question or if the answer is staring me in the face but...... Where does everyone get their wheels? I know there is a general tendency to use the same thing (15x4.5 steelies with 4.5" PCD) but where does one come across such an item? There's no shortage ...

Re: New lakester build
Thanks Gaz
At this stage it's a collection of parts and steel tubing. I'm moving house (and workshop) this week then work will commence putting the chassis together.

Re: New lakester build
I had planned on using aluminium for the skin however I don't have a TIG and I'd like to avoid inserting several thousand rivets so that may end up being impractical. My experience is all with steel and that better suits my tools so that looks like the route I'll take. If I do end up building the wh...

E class streamliner
G'day all, I am about to kick of my lakester build and rather than work off a drawing (I'm not much of an artist) I have put together a 1/18 scale model. Now before everyone jumps on and tells me it's not a lakester because the wheels are streamlined, the wheel fairings are not actually intended for...

Re: The old lakester suspension argument.......
I think Dr Goggles makes a good point about the sprung vs unsprung weight issue. My front end is a cast iron I beam so it's bound to cause trouble for the suspension hitting bumps at high speed. Mounting the front end on rubber blocks seems a good idea though. I think my best bet is to build it with...

The old lakester suspension argument.......
I am soon to start laying out the chassis for my lakester build but before I do that I need to resolve this issue of whether or not to incorporate suspension. The rear end will be rigid, that much I am sure of, however I simply cannot decide whether to do the same on the front. The positives of a ri...

Re: New to land speed racing
I was thinking about going down that road with a 90 degree change of direction then a chain drive to a toughened harley sequential box. That is of course until I found pictures of the classic Eddie Miller lakester. He had the gearbox output shaft passing under the rear axle then a chain drive to the...

Re: New to land speed racing
I have an old magazine article about a V8 bike that might just solve this chain drive caper. This guy used a vw transaxle flipped over so the clutch is at the front, then stuck a sprocket and an outboard bearing where one of the axles used to be. He was using an old rover 3500 motor. I've also seen ...

Re: New to land speed racing
I'm based on the NSW central coast north of sydney. I'm very interested in the whole chain drive concept but how is such a thing achieved? I could mount the engine sideways but just thinking about getting the clutch to work gives me a headache. I take it this has been done before so I would be very ...

Re: New to land speed racing
I'm planning on using an aussie 4 speed box although I haven't bought one yet so I'm open to other ideas. Inspiration to start the build actually came from the street machine hot rod annual article on the Reverend and Dr's tank. I don't think they have anything to worry about though. The bar has bee...

New to land speed racing
Hello all, Just wanted to say G'day as a newcomer to the sport. I have been drag racing a '76 Honda CB750 on and off for some time but after long enduring the protests of the wife, I decided it was time to sell it. "No more motorbikes!" she said. "why don't you build a nice car instea...

Re: Revisiting alternate sites
The shrubs and fences are mainly in the north west quarter of the lake which has been dry the longest and borders the highway. Most of the fences were in pretty poor shape last time I saw them having not been replaced since the lake was full in the mid 90's. If necessary, I don't imagine it would be...

Re: Revisiting alternate sites
Hi all, I'm very new to this dry lakes business having come from drag racing, however I have been watching with great interest the search for a new race venue. Now I apologise in advance if this is a ridiculous suggestion (as I said, I'm new to this) but has any consideration ever been given to lake...
