Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

4.JPG The “new” gearbox mounted on my jig plate I wanted to buy a piece of 12mm mild steel, but I found a piece of 16mm 350 grade surplus to requirements at a friend’s work (free). 5.JPG Don't worry Harkey, all worked out in the end, finished Length 450mm, I was hoping to get down to 435mm but this...

Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

Now it is time to "Get Medieval" on the gearbox. 1.JPG Firstly marked up the front of the gearbox for the area to be removed. Note I want to keep the 4 through bolt holes that mount the gearbox to the gas generator (the jet engine part) and the engine mount on the side of the sump area. 2....

Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

One last thing I thought I would put the large final drive gear on some scales and see how much weight I am taking out 4.JPG 17 Kg that will not be spinning around the place. I guess this will mean quicker acceleration, but I will need to fairly spot on with governor to prevent an over speed? I will...

Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

Back to the saga.... Next thing is splining the gear, and picking a steel to make the drive shaft out of. Well this turned out to be an interesting exercise in itself, one thing I found out was that different steels and different hardness's "Don't play well together". When I destroyed my f...

Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

Just a bit more info on the engine, a guy I have been talking to in the US has the same type of Nimbus engine in a ROAD REGISTERED Dodge van. He runs is at the drags as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBozXKnSZ6o The main problem is that it has a habit of vaporising tyres.... :D :D :D Would ma...

6. Hey presto drive shaft 6.JPG 7. The "drive shaft is held in by a cross key on the opposite end on the shaft, lock plate & nut. 7.JPG The shaft itself is way too puny to hold any real torque and a single key at the rear wont do it either but more on that later. Any way sorry about the cra...

Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

Ok where I left off, and the pinion spinning at 16,000 rpm well John came to the rescue again and after measuring the pinion bearings: bearing.JPG He cross referenced the dimensions and came up with rated speed of 11,000 rpm.... well that's close enough for me may need some improved oiling for heat ...

Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

Yep, I know there was some kind of big political stuff up with Mirage. When the RAAF had finished with them the Government sold them to Pakistan and now Pakistan uses them as their front line launching platform for their nuclear cruise missiles..... A few red faces in Canberra.... :? :? :? Okay, bac...

Hi Tiny, Yep have been talking to Andres for the last couple of years on another page, he and the rest of has team have done an amazing job actually building the complete engine from scratch.... that's a bit beyond me, I just bought an engine and started messing around with it. Re: Gas Turbine streamliner

Hi RGV. Thanks for the reply, I thought about putting a diff in there, but a couple of problems, firstly the engine is too tall now and I need to narrow it down a bit. Also because the output shaft is only doing 2250 rpm & the wheels would need to be doing ~4000 rpm so there would need to be a b...
