a new class?
Maybe we should create a new class for hybrids. It doesn't matter that there aren't any here yet, someone might build one if a class exists. Rather than specify the class of car we could just make hybrid an engine class so they can run in any type of vehicle. I doubt that many people will ever run a...

slick ideas
Doc, Anything that didn't leave a residue on the salt would be a good start. So no WD40. Not much of a problem for your belly tank though. How do people get the salt out from under sedans? That would be a nightmare to do properly. Maybe a very well sealed belly pan would be the shot where they're le...

salt buildup
Graham, I'm only guessing but I don't think the salt buildup would be an issue. I'm thinking that it would be self regulating, if the salt was soft enough to fill the entire space between the tyre and the guard it would fall back off over bumps and be thrown out by the tyre. If the salt was hard and...

rules from the 1950's
Gordon, you're right about the Prius drive train but you're wrong about the DLRA rules. Already we have a new class for utes that suits us more than the SCTA and our rules evolve as we learn more about what makes sense for us and what doesn't. I bet if someone turned up with a Prius with all the req...

I've got polycarbonate transition lenses in my riding glasses with magnetic clip-on sunglasses but they don't wrap around the sides at all. I've never seen any in the optometrists either. I'd love it if I could get something with prescription lenses in the style of the non-prescription ones crickete...

forget I spoke!
Doc, thanks for showing me the link. Your car is great, my advice looks to be entirely superfluous! Well done, I look forward to seeing it run in 2008. W3stie, if all this confuses you make sure you come to the July meeting at Don Noble's workshop at Coopers Plains (details elsewhere in here). You'l...

hot under the collar
Hey Doc, I had a look at the Mal Hooper car, the one with the Bluebird style body split along the horizontal midline, it is a good looking unit. Do it! I tried to find the Streetliner but all I got was recumbent bicycles. Now for more gratuitous and unsolicited advice. You could do a few things to f...

having a go
Yeah, Doc, you're writing but you're also building which puts you well ahead of me. I won't be able to start building anything until after Christmas as I don't have the space yet. You make a good point about relative speeds and stability of lakesters and streamliners. The danger of pencil rolls make...

Front brakes
And there's plenty more salt after the scraped length if you don't mind a bumpy ride so I understand your point about not really needing racer brakes at Lake Gairdner, Doc. I've always been a fan of front brakes and I can't get comfy with not having any. Way back when they were legal in sprint karts...

W3stie, for any speed you just need double safety beaded steel rims with the centres welded to the rim all the way round. Bob Ellis previously recommended a mob in Brisbane that can supply the right welded wheels but I can't remember who they are, I'm sure Bob will be happy to tell you. If you'd rat...

I had a good time there on Saturday with Bob, Chris, Matthew and Nathan talking to interested people. One guy I spoke to had a 69 Camaro street car that he said he doesn't use enough, probably because it has a 632 big block(!) with a Richmond 6 speed. He'd be lucky to make it to the next petrol stat...

Bob and Chris, thanks to you both for your responses. I'm from a circuit racing background so I had imagined that dry, hard salt would be like concrete and not change until it got wet. So I was thinking that something that just removed the scraped up loose salt crystals would leave a surface that wa...

Traction questions
Dr Goggles said that traction on the salt can be a limiting factor, so here's my question. I saw a video at Don Noble's get together of the track being scraped flat with a piece of railway track that was leaving a lot of loose salt lying on the track surface. Would this be part of the problem or do ...
