Okay, if there is no more rain on the lake and the track from now on,how many days will it take for both to dry out taking into consideration the low temperature at present ? Then we have to add a day for machine examination. Any thoughts gentlemen?

Agree 100% Cookie, I rang to check it yesterday before posting here.

Spook,

I'd be surprised if they are not scrutineering already in the shearing shed if possible to try and get a head start when the green light comes.

Nonning had 12.8mm yesterday but the forecast is looking good dependant upon lake conditions. It's a little cool but the breeze should help evaporation rates.

As at 8:26 local time the road status from Iron Knob remains : Hiltaba to Iron Knob - 4WD Only - Extreme caution due to slippery, boggy conditions, ponded water and washouts.

Just talked with Rod Hadfield and the meet is definitely cancelled. Please see copy of email sent out to members who are on the DLRA data base.

"DLRA 2011 Speed Week cancelled due to huge rainfall in the past few days which has resulted in the salt being unsuitable for racing & from today [Saturday 19th March] the road between Iron Knob & the Lake being closed to all traffic".

Wow, nature can have awful timing when it chooses, and it seems to be making its presence felt globally.

Thanks Cookey and all involved at the lake and elsewhere, it really feels like you did everything and waited as long as you could for the best info and decision given the circumstances.

We all witnessed how it can rain when we are there and then be fine for racing soon after so we understand having to leave the decision so late; if there was any chance we all wanted to take it I'm sure.

The only saving grace I guess is that we have all put in the hard yards to get our vehicles ready and so there has been a lot of good work done nationwide which may have not been done had it been cancelled sooner.

Now to start planning for 2012.

Time to find an alternative venue , maybe Woomera if this occurs again, just have a plan b , whatever costs or complications are sure to be less than total costs and probs caused to several hundred people at this point

Just got of the phone to Big Gaz at the lake now,
2" to 6" inches of water over the entire lake, the water has dragged enough silt with it to cover most of the white salt with a the red silt...
As we say its proper EFF YOU SEE KAYED....and the Fat Lady has sung...
Don't Worry, It only seems Kinky the first time..

Spot on Greg,
Mother nature has hammered the nail into the coffin so to speak as far as us running this year, but time may (or may not) will tell if the call to cancel Speedweek 2011 should have been left as late as it was as there appears to be some issues that were made evident as far back as Monday when the situation of damage to the entry and exit point caused by a film crew who had been using the lake was posted.
We have to wear the carry over damage that other users of the lake such as film crews (who have humungus budgets to gain access) and just seem to keep on getting away with it.
Never the less we have no control over the weather and have relied upon historical data in deciding on the time to run Speedweek this year.
There has to be an alternate racing venue such as Woomera for an albeit restricted meet so that those who make the long haul still have somewhere to run for an official DLRA time.

If anyone thinks moving to a later date was a problem, I can assure you that it probably didn't make any difference. This summer has been an exceptionally wet summer. The hills across the gulf from the power stn at Pt Augusta rarely get green in winter, this year they are greener in Feb and March than they have ever been in winter in the last 40 yrs I've been living in Pt Augusta. As of this morning (Saturday) we have almost had half our annual rainfall for the year. A Woomera option may be worth looking into, surely there is an airstrip or two up there? Last weekend the Whyalla drags were almost cancelled as there was 9mm of rain between 8.30 and 11.30am, but not a drop in Pt Augusta.
Cheers Mossy
