First time Start Line assistant

Post by Mossy »

As this will be my first time helping out with Speed Week I was wondering what will be needed as a Start Line assitant. I am guessing the following will be necessary;
Hat, Sunny's, sun cream.
Esky with plenty of drinking water
Umbrella for a bit of shade
A folding chair on the off chance there is a quiet period

Would ear muffs and a hi-viz jacket be a good idea?

Anything else I should take or anything there I don't need?

Cheers Mossy

And a camera Mossy you will love it, great view as they disappear in the distance. Ear plugs essential. Well done for jumping in on the volunteering

Hi Mossy

And welcome to the startline.

You've about covered it. Just bring a good sense of humor and realise some guys are also strapping in or on for the first time. They need a bit extra time till they understand the routine. Some are nervous and some are just rarin to go. Some forget the little obvious things like arm restrainsts or whatever because they are focased on the run so thats or job. To check they are safe to go.

Depending which track we assign you to there will be a chief starter to report to so make yourself known well before your shift that you are there and ready to go.

We will have a startline volunteer meeting on the Sunday afternoon at 3.00pm held at the GPS startline. This will give all you guys a run down on schedule, duties, questions etc. We will then run out to the short/long coarse start and explain the differences there. Any that don't make it for this meeting, I will do a catch up Monday morning sparrowfart.

Lynchy has written a comprehensive startline procedure manual which should be essential reading for all.

Any questions yell out.
Thanks

Thanks for the info. I was planning on slipping the camera in as well (and making sure the batt is charged this year).
I figured this would be a good way to learn what goes on before turning up with the bike next year.
Any chance of getting a copy of Lynchy's manual beforehand?

Mossy - and other potential starters

I've done up a procedures doc and it includes a lot of the necessary items. If you or anyone else is interested, PM me with your email address and I'll send a copy to you. I will be printing up a copy and will have it at each of the start lines.

I've sent off the procedures to Mossy and Dave.

Any other volunteer starters want a copy of the manuals?

Dave

No worries. I noticed on the volunteer register that there's a heap of others helping out so I hope they also get a PM to me for the docs. Trev just got sent a copy tonight.

I will be taking down bound copies though so no need to panic. These will be available at the start line.

Rereading it last night and noticed it still had reference to 2 hr shifts. I think we discussed and agreed to make it morning shift or arvo shift?
Am I right?

I'll see if I can fix it up, otherwise we just make sure people sign up for 2 shifts.

BTW - Thursday is looking a bit lean for volunteers..... anyone else want to sign up??

I'd love to volunteer. This will be my first time spectating, if I'm brave enough (and organised enough) I'd love to run next year. Voluteering seems like a good way to get stuck in and help. I'm pit crewing for a couple of mates as well.

I'll head over to the voluteers thread and see what I can help with.

Cheers

onya Heidi!

Don't be shy out at the lake to offer assistance either. You'll be directed somewhere where help is needed.
