Forgive me for asking (again?), but dark is damp(er), lighter is drier Paul ?
Thanks for all your effort & time to make this info available to all . :D
Greg W, would Bob Ellis have access to the latest data that Paul put up, while he is lakeside ?

Light is good/ dark is bad (damp).

All you need to take to the lake is a laptop with the TNTaltas software installed and the tif images that I have uploaded. I'll make a few months available so you know the history of how the salt formed. There will be a satellite image happening while speed week is on and I will upload that here. If someone can get to the interweb it will only be a 8Meg download.

Has someone got the GPS coordinates for the proposed track - I might be able to include those also.

Cheers,

Someone has the interweb sorted for speed week 2015. I also have organised a two sector Wi-Fi setup that should cover most of the pit area.

Just got off the phone to Bob, he will be in Port Augusta tomorrow morning, leaving for the lake Wednesday morning. I'll try and tell him to have a look at the forum to check out Paul's pics

Bob - if you can't get the software here are some details - below is a sketch (pink line) of what looks like a transition from hard (South/West) to soft (North/East). Here are the GPS coordinates for that line (starting at the top)

X Position (E) Y Position (N)
589816.0657 -3558171.221
590682.7366 -3557902.966

Paul how would staining from dirty water of previous floodings effect the readings ? change of reflectivity change the temps ?

So, between the people onsite, and the satellite, it looks like an awesome track, turning not quite so awesome in the 'braking' area, north end, yeah?
: )
Always a good to thing to know before ya start driving that way.
Thanks for the info.

The short answer is I dunno ;)

I would interpret it by seeing what is on the ground and "if" there is an issue which has a correlation to the dark patch. If there is an issue we can then treat it as a "possible" indicator for the rest of the dark patch (saves you some driving). This "could" indicate a damp patch under the salt but the crust may be thick and hard enough that no one notices. Or it could be something else.

The long answer is - I spoke to a professor here at Monash and he said the only way to read these accurately is to take a bunch of measuring instruments out to the lake and measure the surface properties directly and create a model that gives an accurate correlation between the satellite readings and the ground readings. So a lot of work requiring special instruments and we don't know what readings we care about yet. I think we first see if the above helps, I think it would have in 2014.

Cheers,

Bugger - cloud cover and I can't get a good read on the lake surface :(

Spat a tiny bit here in Kimba last night but not much, was the kind of rain here that if you got it on the lake would probably do more good than harm :) fingers crossed it stays real nice

Here are the images from 30/03/2015 where you can now see the tracks (white lines) and pit area ;)

Does this reveal anything of value? i.e. does the surface transition from a light colour to a darker colour correlate to any surface difference people experienced on the track?

track 2 return definitely felt as dodgy as the pic looks
mud just under the surface there
Lake entry area clearly shows the water that was rising in the wheel tracks but i expected more of an indication of the wet area subsurface around that area

That is spot on. Move the track 2 a few degrees and the return would miss that slush. Was the only glitch on either track all week.

Had a weird experience on the Sunday when we were setting up later in the day. We were heading back to the timing van from the 5 mile timing setup and at some point we could see a colour change on the lake surface and I thought it was cloud but the wheel noise changed as soon as we transitioned to the different coloured surface. At the time I wondered if it was the transition zone in the images???

I didn't notice it at all on the Monday and I was gone on Tuesday.
