NEWS FLASH ... ACCESS TO LAKE GAIRDNER ... NEWS FLASH

Post by DON NOBLE »

BAD NEWS RE ACCESS ONTO THE SALT LAKE .
I have recieved a call at approx 10 . 30 pm EDST , from Rod Hadfield and talked to Bob Ellis as well , who are at the DLRA camp .
Rod Hadfield has requested me to put this notice on this here internet .
Bob Ellis has informed me , that approx the first 150 mtrs of the salt lake from the edge , is virtually impassable . It , as Bob put it ,its like sludge .
Bob managed to push a steel rod into the surface and it went down about 2 ft with little effort .
So it doesnt look very promising at all .
A meeting of those at the lake , will be held on Saturday morning . I believe that this meeting is going to be early .
This meeting is to determine if the event is to be on .

Just checking the weather maps, there doesn't seem to be any record of recent rainfall.

Is it just the edge of the lake that's soft? I remember last time I was there someone said the point where the track comes in is the only solid part near the edge. If you walked either side a few hundred metres it all went to slush.

Has something changed or is it a carry over from the rain back in Jan?

Our car is already on its way and we've got flights and a camper booked. I think we're going to go anyway! We'll figure out something to do.

Maybe some 'test runs' down the Eyre Highway.

yes this is the result of the January rain . lake surface in accessable for 1st 150 mtrs or so , and the surface for racing on is still too damp .

Being new to all this.

Will the club be out of pocket due to the cancellation?
What do yoou normally do in cases like this (assuming it has happened before!)

Ask for donations, pass the hat around levy members?

Does not seem fair that some may be left carrying the can after the S@#* starts falling!.

What part of the word cancelled do you not understand ?

The event is OFF. No point in going and nothing to see.

The bit I don't understand is why it was left so late. Our car is already on the way, we've booked flights a camper van and I had planned to go to Whyalla next weekend for the drag racing.

It sucks all round, but I'd rather go all the way out there and then get told it's off. Kinda weird, but I reckon it would be less disappointing.

Having your bags packed and ready to go, then being told it's off is a real bummer.

Yes the Surveyors would have been there to set up so surely some one could have said something earlier. Will be one cost that will have to be paid.

We can only wait and hear what they have to say on return as to why they decided to cancel the event like they did.

I am glad I was not one that had to make the decision.

Yep, I bet Rod and the boys are just as bummed as the rest of us. Would have been a tough decision to make, that's for sure.

As of 10pm last night we still hadn't got hold of our other team members, so we're just assuming they've seen the sign at the lake entrance and will get the multitude of phone and SMS messages that we've sent them, soon!

I'm still heading out to Whyalla next weekend to cover the drags, so at least I'll get a bit of a speed fix. Not the same though... :(

What was the motto again?

THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!!!
