TEST VENUES

Post by DON NOBLE »

Starting this topic to group ideas on test run venues . In this huge country there has got to be somewhere that we can run cars for test runs .
The people in Victoria have just had a test day at Mangalore airport .
AIRPORTS seem like a good alternative if you can get access .
I have been doing a bit of research on airports within a few hundred kilometres Brisbane and in northern NSW . Most seem to be around a 1 mile in length .
DRAGSTRIP
Willowbank has a total lenght of approx 800 mtrs ( 1/2 mile )
RACETRACKS
Queensland Raceways longest straight ( the long back one ) is approx 600 mtrs , plus you can get a run up into it from the sweeping entry corner .

One way to search is using Google Earth , you can click the icon to show all airports , and you can also measure lengths using the ruler icon on top of screen . Another way I found was using my Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 Game which has all world airports listed , including length of all runways and type of surface ( paved , gravel or dirt )

If you think you have any ideas on places to run a test event , please add your comments .

Little birdie told me, Dirty Dave just got a 91 acre block of Mallee scrub. I'm thinkin' a salt paved driveway (might cost us a couple of slabs to convince him). Same landscape, we'd feel right at home. How many K's fit into 91 Acres?

Salt was the only thing missing at the airport. Apart from track length. Yes, there were flies.

Did a handful of flying lessons about three lifetimes ago. There are maps of all airports. Did a Goog's, they're called a "Visual Terminal Chart".

Anybody got mates that do a bit of flying. They'll probably have access to these.

They're for sale here:

Thanks for that Greg , gees is that all there is
That works out at about 4 runways for each person that races .

Looking at the "Dirtington Estate" on Google Earth I think that the resident wombats may have some impact on potential terminal velocity speeds that may be achieved in the driveway up to the mansion

New runway 100ft wide and smooth, only worry is the gutter that goes underneath mid track, bit hard to see how close it is to the runway
Bones once mentioned Casino as an option, worth checking out too.

aeroclub

That aeroclub website can also find QLD airstrips, 17 pages of them. Most at a quick glance seem to be station airstrips for light aircraft and RFDS and would be short and unsealed and full of emus. Couldn't find much info on lengths either. Will have to get Google Earth and keep looking.
Found some other websites where people have tried drag racing on the local country airstrip (with police support to reduce street racing), only to be told that CAA rules spoil most of their fun. Apparently at Narrandera all racing had to be over two hours(!) before any scheduled flights. I wonder if that ever applied at Mangalore?
Maybe we need to find a shire council with an unregulated strip or a nice long straight flat bit of back road they could close off for a day.
Good, Fast, Cheap, pick any two!

TEMORA is NO . I phoned the Temora council airport guy , and he said no , eventho they do allow some testing of cars for motor magazines on the airport .
He suggested I try Narrandera , which i will later .

NARRANDERA . I just phoned Carlo Luisi who is president of the Riverina Drag Racing association . They used to conduct drag racing on the airstrip there . The drags stopped about a month ago because they now have to be off the airstrip by around midday . Previously they used to run the drags from 6 am and be off the runway and cleaned up by 3 pm . He also said they initially had a lot of probs getting use of the airport , but I will sound them out .
How does 6am until midday sound to you all ?
What do you think of the location ?
