does anyone know what or why is all that red dirt on the edge of the lake.
it seems different to when i started going in 04. is the edge of the lake changing. just a bit concerned that with native title permission now needed to get onto the lake, it doesn't look all that passable. good to see stewart pennycook back at the lake. missed you bro.

Ben
I've been there every year since 99 and the entry is different each time, sometimes more than others. I don't think we should worry.

Ben, it had the consistency of fine gravel, we encountered very similar patches along the road in to the lake and out. It's worse for a heavy vehicle and 2 patches of this stuff were the only times that we were in trouble in the bus. There were drifts of this stuff all along the shoreline, above and below the waterline.
Right at the very edge of the ramp there was a drop off of about 200mm. This was about the only reference point that I could use as everything else had changed. I'm assuming that this "gap" was the salt that had been washed away. Talking to one of the station hands from Mt. Ive he said that the salt that had been washed away was just around the corner (next little bay or inlet) to the north and that with the correct wind conditions would eventually be blown back.
The amazing thing was looking south from the ramp just how far this exposed area extended. The other amazing thing was Saturday it was exposed, Sunday it was all under water, just like the tide had come in.

Ben, Stewey drove the new Club Animal tender vehicle, a L300 Mistubishi, from Melbourne. Didn't miss a beat until he turned onto the dirt and refused to play just after the phone booth as Siam. No probs, just tied it to the F-Truck, which turned out to be a good thing 'cause the truck lost brakes, so they had to work as a team to make it through some of the worst conditions you have ever seen, the little L300 bouncing off the banks and floating through the water for over 130km's! Makes me laugh thinking about Stew telling and re-telling the story, but a hell of an effort.

indeed

The tide HAD come in, I wasn't there, sadly, but I'm pretty sure that the moon being closer to earth than it has been for 19 years had something to do with it..(from http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/sc ... supermoon/)

A perigee full Moon brings with it extra-high "perigean tides," but this is nothing to worry about, according to NOAA. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters (an inch or so) higher than usual. Local geography can amplify the effect to about 15 centimeters (six inches)--not exactly a great flood.

I was sitting t home with the truck finally loaded ready to go , two days later than I'd hoped when the call came through from Dirty Dave. By that arvo the good lady had found a site with return rentals and we jumped a camper van with only 85k's on the clock left Thursday and drove it to Alice via the rock and King's Canyon for 5 bucks a day plus most of the diesel, We got our desert fix, sorta, it was green as Ireland all the way to the Alice, Coober Pedy was weird, but the really notable thing was hardly any roadkill, and we didn't see one live 'roo........a few dead ones but none on the hop.

We passed the Animal bus near Keith on Thursday, yeah, didn't get a wave did we

Sorry Doc, the gaze was very much fixed on home at that time. We had a wonderful night, Wednesday in an A frame cabin at the Westwood caravan park at Tailem Bend on the rather full banks of the mighty Murray River (and it was freezing). Then went to Old Tailem Town the next morning, which was really good and you should gobefore the place disappears into dust.

Well well well

After getting the news at ironically Orroroo, and having dragged the Effie and the Datsun half way across the country, to be honest I'm no longer surprised if it rains on a Saturday in March at Lake Gairdner. I don't care anymore where the bloody moon is, I'm just pissed.

Kathy had flown to Adelaide and rented a plastic dashboard so she picked me up and we said goodbye to the team.
We spent a wonderful week touring the Limestone coast from Portland back to end up with only one day on Kangaroo Island. The island was superb and I could happily spend a lifetime there if it were'nt the climate. An enjoyable Plan B but I'd rather been racing.
