The John Britten Story

Seeing there was a little bit of a teaser about John Britten (R.I.P.) on another thread http://www.dlra.org.au/forum/viewtopic. ... 0&start=45 and the mention that it might warrant it's own thread, well I thought why not.

I discovered the Britten Bikes a few years ago and the Legend was well established by then.

So for anyone who is unfamiliar with this extraordinary story check out these links.

If any one does actually have first hand experience with these Bikes or John Britten, I would really like to hear about it. (Chris D maybe??)

enjoy :D :D

I think one of the best bits is the time it goes past the Factory Ducati on the back wheel at 3/4 throttle at Daytona. Well its all good bits really. Like when he is quenching the set of cases that he has just cast.

This is a link to One Man's Dream - The Britten Bike Story, it's a more complete Doco, runs for 1 1/2 hours.

It's got the Britten World Record attempts on it as well.

Truly an inspirational story where David Betters Goliath and where the eternal optomist is rewarded by his valiant efforts, simply EPIC. 8)

I did meet John in person. I was working for Fisher & Paykel, they sponsored him and he brought his bike to our factory.
Completely amazing machine but more so when he spoke about it.
Everything was done for a reason, like putting the radiator under the seat and ducting the air to it, this he reasoned reduced the frontal area. Every other vee twin had a fairing like a parallel 4.
Tim Hanna wrote an excellent book that details a lot of the history.
Murray Atkins was the brains behind most of it.

There is also a LSR connection to Britten.
Jon White used one of his engines in a streamliner. I never knew of this until I read the book.
I think they had gremlins at Bonneville.

The involvement in that project got the britten guys thinking. They ran a bike with a dustbin fairing on a closed road timed sprint near christchurch. From memory they set a NZ land speed record (don't know if it was official or not)
