Lake Buchanan - Queensland.

Post by project100 »

Hi all. I went to a DLRA General Meeting in 2013 where a Queensland member gave a presentation on Lake Buchanan as another possible speed trials venue. It seemed like it could be a go. Unfortunately I missed Lake Gairdner due to family issues and I was wondering if Lake Buchanan may be on the calendar sometime this year. I'm keen for any news. Thanks.

Just checked landsat..
19 FEB is the latest update, and showing water in half the lake..
We need to make it through to Easter without any more rain. On our last reconisance trip we entered at the bottom end of the lake and got stuck.
This issue upset us at the time and we never ventured to the north of the lake. After conversing with Staytie while at lake Gairdner he informed me that we were at the shit end of the lake..
So ............Once the lake is showing no water on landsat we will organize some vehicles to run on it .. If all good we are looking to run in late september.

Ross..

Ross you should be able to get the latest landsat here:

1) Register here https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/register/

2) Once you are in search for Lake Butchanan, QLD here http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ and zoom in and hit "Use Map" for the coordinates (this will only come up with results in that region)

3) Change the "Date Range" e.g. Search from 01/01/2014

4) Hit the "Data Sets >>" button and select Landsat Archive - "L8 OLI/TIRS" and "L7 ETM+ SLC-ff (2003-present)"

5) Then click "Results" and flick between the two landsat data sets

Here's one for the 28th Feb (Landsat 7)

Ross,

Have to agree with Staytie.

That black goo we pushed Jon's VW out of looked like shit. It smelt like shit and under the circumstances it would have been running down my leg if us 3 numskulls didn't get that VW out after pushing for an hour.
So agreed, we choose the shit end.
I'd prefer the end that smells like roses when we go back...:)

the daughter of a friend of mine done a gelogical(spelling) study on Lake Buchanan as a project for her studies at James Cook Uni (Townsville),, he told me the lake falls 11", 280mm, north to south,(approx 17 miles), even in dry times the southern end (where the public access road is) is suspect,, it can be accessed at the northern end with permission from the owners,, there is(was) an access about two thirds up the eastern side, following a fenceline in,,
