It may be a good thing for roads etc. Lets hope they do not do any damage to the lake surface similar to what happened to Bonneville.

Any one know what sort of mining ???

damn miners

Post by gennyshovel »

I can just picture a HUGE drill rig , parked on the salt , with an equally HUGE poly tarp under it , spill kit at the ready (mmm? wonder how fast they go?)

Surely the mining will be something around the lake and not on the ( salt )surface of the lake.

Yes, under strict rules.

I would expect the mining lease or exploration rights would not allow them access onto the salt.
Any one know the name of the company that was mentioned on the news ? Could do a google search on them to find out what is going on.

large gold and copper deposits AROUND the lake ie: Gawler Rangers.

Didn't catch who has the rights, but it is a co-operative venture with the indeginous communities of the areas involved.

It would be unlikely to have the govt road paved, my concern is will the road get chewed to hell with the increase of heavy transport using it

Lake Gairdner is in the Gawler region for mining and has a large deposit of gold and copper (and scatterings of Uranium). The article below tells of industry hopes for a new "golden mile" which have telltale signs in the Gawler area but not yet located.

http://www.crca.asn.au/press_releases/2003/2003-6-5.htm

Uranium deposits are described here;

The news item referered to in the forum concerns the deal done between Gawler Ranges Native Title Group, the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement and the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy at Lake Gairdner. Basically it means that the way is smooth between interested parties (read "paid off") if and when mining goes ahead.

This means that the big boys could come in and pave the roads if there is money enough in the mine, but depending on where the mine is and which land owners consent who knows where that road will be... (There already exists the train line too and the well travelled route to Leigh Creek...)

And there IS money in the mine as evidenced by this article which is says that if the Olympic Dam expansion project goes ahead it will at a "captial cost of $8 billion..."

Fingers crossed it is not in the wrong place.
