A very valid point.

The Russian president Vladimir Putin when constantly confronted with all the "WHAT IFF'S" was reported to have said " and if grandma had a penis she'd be grandpa" ......the medical point is still valid even if the safety rules where increased a hundred fold ,the only thing it would change would be the $$$ and a massive drop out rate of members who could afford to race ....no one except God can predict when a serious accident or death will happen regardless of how much $afety equipment or rules are applied.......by its very nature racing is a risk.
As it now stands entries for cars ( and maybe even bikes) will continue to stagnate or drop ......costs will continue to rise ( just look at the increase for this year compared to previous years) ...for speed week to be viable and affordable we need to grow the number of active racers ....by allowing a street class with minimal but well thought out safety regs more people may be enticed to participate ( good for club finances) and who knows maybe they will fork out a motza to build an LSR car ( again good for the club).
Finally where is the hard evidence ( proof ) that LSR will cease to exist if God forbid a death should occur......point me to any other racing or sporting event that ceased to exist where a death or serious accident happened ......furthermore if the case against a street class is grounded in the fear of LSR ceasing due to serious accidents /death this same fear would be valid regardless of how this happens, even within the now present rules....let reason and sound logic decide the case not "WHAT IFF'S" and politically correct BS.

A pont to consider and somewhat relevent is that there is already a precedent here in Aus with the unlimited NT speed limits. The Stuart highway is somewhere with no emergency services at hand and in parts is as equally remote as the lake if not more so.

There was an interesting study carried out that attributed a majority of SVRO (single vehicle roll over) accidents in the NT when there used to be unlimited roads to things like vehicle defects, driver fatigue, driving at speeds too fast for road conditions and driving under the influence of drugs / alcohol. The death rate was also highest where people were not wearing seatbelts. All of these things are easily controllable at the lake. It's also worth noting that the NT is currently carrying out trials to return to open limits as their studies show that removal of the open limits over the past 6 years has not reduced the road toll.

If speeds like this are okay for govornment controlled roads, surely it should be okay for the lake where there is actually much better safety.

yeah good idea for the re-introduction of a sub130MPH 'street class' but it does open up discussion about safety

I've already blown lots of money building a dedicated 'salt' VW but it would have been far easier to simply run my other road-reg track VW for a year or three

Have been following this forum for a few years now. I'm a younger generation hotrodder, all my life I wanted to own and build a hot rod like my old man. I built an award winning rod and my dad could not be prouder, passing down his passion to the next generation was greatest achievement he said. Now a father myself I'm passing down our family passion to my boy, hopefully he will do the same with his kids one day.

I have every book and dvd on Bonneville , el mirage and muroc there is I reckon. I have always been fascinated by mans quest for speed! I went to Bonneville in 2012, I have been plenty of places all over the world in my life but nothing like there. It is the most amazing place I have ever seen!

When we were there we seen streamliners worth millions and then there were the strugglers that have built $5000 cars. I went and asked them whats your car run mate and he replied going for a 82mph record. I said wow 82mph that's a fair bit slower then that car over there. He replied buddy that's why I love this sport , its the only amateur sport left that the government or bodies haven't wrecked by regulation.

He then said doesn't matter if you go 50mph or 400mph when your out here its the most amazing thing in the world and once you experience it you will know what I mean. I turned to the old man and said we have to do this back home! Dad said love to mate but way to expensive to get something built bud. I was dishearten I constantly follow this forum and others and only dream when I could have something built to race at lake Gairdner one day.
I think for any car guy its a must once in there life! From a new comers point of view I think if you guys follow virtually everything the SCTA do why isn't the 130mph class here also? If you want this sport here to progress into the future Its a must! The event is once a year and that's even if you can run due to the event being washed out a few times. That's a long time between drinks if you have a purpose built salt car.

I don't believe you should open the flood gates and let anything in , regulation must still prevail but I believe a realistic approach. Run what you brung sounds awesome and if it used to work before then why not now? Not everyone has a massive budget just like any sport. Hotrodding for example guy builds 100,000+ show car other a 20,000 dollar one both deserve to be judged at the show.

For this once a year event you need to travel to the remotest part of Australia but reading things on here sounds like you need to spend 1000s just getting there etc before the thought of a car/bike! More members means more money, exposure and the prolonging of this great sport.

As for the possibility of an accident isn't that what you sign an indemnity form before racing for? The dlra shouldn't be liable for anything if you signed the form.
As I'm knew to all this that's my 2 bobs worth, would love to go racing one day.....
I never comment on anything on this forum as I class myself as not qualified for such a thing , but when I red that there used to be this class its sparked interest to know more about it and also the possibility that it could happen again well lets say I'm rounding the boys up for a chat !

Cheers

Welcome aboard, thanks for the well considered comments.
I think it will only take a rule change submission and some interest and this may get off the ground. The committee read this forum and value the input from it.
I have made my personal view of support for this class for many years. I think it can be made to work with strict guidelines.

You sound like you HAVE to race on Lake Gairdner, its simply and matter of when.

Seconded FOOSED's great post.

Glad to see I'm not the only one lurking and wondering if that rule will change.

My own situation dictates that I couldn't afford to convert my low cost track car to be legal on the salt, while its perfectly fine to run at the drags and track days. Getting it legal just isn't enough bang/buck for one week per year when it can run if the weather allows.

Did anything ever come of this? I have finally built a coaster campervan, and am planning on going to the lake in 2016. I will only spectate my first year, but it would have been nice to be able to have a toe in the water run. I have a VN hillclimb car that would not take much to be legal, however I would have run D Pro, and the record this year is now over 200mph, so no cheap tyres for me. I have looked at a couple of second hand cars as well, but I haven't seen anything that could be run on a small budget.

The Committee have not received anything officially or in writing requesting a new or reinstated class.
