For US visitors, an Aussie beer guide.

Post by PJQ2 »

With first time visitors from the other side of the bid pond out at the lake next year, I thought it’d be neighbourly to start a discussion of one of the most important issues they're likely to face...

Here’s my one-eyed view of beers you find on this great muddy island.

Opinions and stories vary, but a fierce and loyal passion for one's local brew is a national characteristic. I’m from Melbourne and naturally, Victorian beer is unsurpassed with Carlton Draught being god’s own nectar.

Don’t have much time for New South Wales beer. During the beer war of the nineties, many fine Melbourne pubs were changed or closed, as Lion Nathan Breweries moved in and put Tooheys on tap. Any dim-wit could’ve predicted the outcome and commercial alliances were soon necessary. A very busy unmarked tap, pouring proper beer, is a normal sight in many of the “ruined” pubs. I’m a scared victim of that dark period, not having recovered from the closure of “The Punters Club” in my beloved Fitzroy.

Two last things a visitor needs to know: (1) Light Beer is low alcohol, not low calorie. (2) Fosters is undrinkable and an export product, over here I’ve only seen it consumed by tourists.

I could say plenty more and probably start a war, but anyone else wanna add their two cents worth - for our visitors edification.

I spent 7 years in noo zillan and they have a good range of beers, my fave being Lion Red, which is like Resch's DA. Here in NSW I drink Tooheys Old. Qld has a tasty laxative called XXXX, Vic has Carlton Draught, plus rubbish like Fosters and VB. Imagine naming a "drink" after a transplanted German sedan. When I returned to AU in 83 I was forever being offered the fashion slop, Fosters. My response was 'No thanks, I'm a beer drinker" Dunno about South or Western AU, the territory, and I'm not commenting on Tas.

A two year long conversation about beer, and you started it PJQ2 ??/
well Coopers Sparling ale, AKA red Devils, South Aussie icon,
Coopers stout, a right winter warmer, mmmmmmmm,
it doesn't have the laxative affect of Tooheys OLD,
Coopers Pale Ale on Tap in every SA pub or there would be a riot, and rightly so perfect for ever occasion, and like its big brother sparkling ale comes with free desert,

The only beer to drink is Melbourne Bitter!
And you don't end up with as sorer (is that a word?) head in the morning.
Mind you the cocky has usually done his thing, but usually as a result of not directly from beer.
Keep the shiney side up........

I'm with DirtyDave. Coopers Sparkling Ale(red label) is the go . The Pale Ale is pretty good too (green label). Both open the sluices nicely.

I was brought up to believe that the reason 4X is called that is because Queenslanders couldn't spell beer!! Hence the XXXX label ! :) :)

I have ried your beers out and found a few gooduns. (Please stop sending your waste water packed in tin cans over--Fosters)
now you lot need to come sample some of our beers. None of that dish water crap like Bud etc, but some genuine beer. Maybe have my brewmaster little brother whip ya up a special batch.

P/S, come watch me run this next year---Image[/img]

Ah yes Fosters .

There is an old joke about this stuff that goes something like this.

Whats the difference between Fosters and making love in a canoe?

None. They are both f***ing near water ! :)
