Heatwave information

Post by DLRA »

A new addition to the DLRA weather page is the Heatwave Service for Australia. The forecast is for a very hot summer in Australia. So anyone contemplating making the journey needs to be well prepared.

To retain my sanity, could anyone please remind me why we race during the hottest part of the year ?
Air density ?
Hard salt ? (or in the hope the sun can dry wet damp salt)
To beat the windy weather ?

What were the problems we encountered in relation to holding the 25th event late March, rather than late Feb ?

Tiny, flamin simple mate , the tide was in last time, supposedly the tides out in Feb,
My two bobs worth....... only mad dogs and englishman go out in Feb sun........I'm neither, so if forcast is over 35 deg I'm taking just the esky and watch all the mad dogs and poms torch their toys.

We got spoilt last year it was the ultimate weather for record setting with cool tail breeze, hard salt, was well worth the mucking around with the tide to get those perfect conditions.

I guess I'll have to do some long term strategies waiting foor the same conditions to happen in Feb, I kinda remember Feb putting peoples in hospital and serious repercussions, I guess its like childbirth , the pain goes away after awhile and where back for another dose. :?

First thing I look at is the phases of the moon. A new moon provides the lowest water table on the lake. A full moon can draw the water table up at least a metre as observed by Mt. Ive workers.

So I look for a week that falls as close as possible to a new moon.
For 2016 I was asked to bring it forward a week, because this year it got wetter as the week went on.

Next I look at rainfall and standing water on the lake.
January - dry, too hot and people are on holidays
February - dry, still hot
March - dry, still hot, can clash with Easter
April - dry, but it will rain at some stage, can clash with Easter
May - too cold, too wet
June - too cold, too wet
July - too cold, too wet
August - too cold, too wet
September - too wet
October - still wet
November - can still be wet
December - dry, but people are on holidays

So that makes February or March as our best months

From the Australian Bureau of Metorology
lowest wind speeds - 1. May, 2. June, 3. April, 4. July
Lowest rain - 1. March, 2. April, 3. Feburary, 4. November
Highest rain - 1. June, 2. July, 3. August, 4. September
Highest temps - 1.Janurary 2.feburary 3. December 4. March
Lowest temps - 1. June, 2. July, 3. August, 4. May
Most clear days - 1. March, 2. Janurary, 3. Feburary, 4. December

new moon in Feb for 2016 is 9th, too early
new moon in March for 2016 is the 9th, less one week is the 2nd, closest Monday is the 29th Feb.
If we waited for the next new moon, it's April and we would be under water.

I also monitor several long range weather forecasts, which are currently predicting a dry, warm and settled conditions for the start of the new year and remaining summer.

For 2017 we are back to March.

For those that are interested in what other information is used in the decision making process, there are some maps and graphs showing Maximum Daily Temperatures, Average Rainfall, Average number of days of rain per month and wind speed and direction at http://www.dlra.org.au/ref-climate.htm
