Shout out!!

Post by jamiepl »

G'day all,
Just a shout out to everyone involved or who attended Speedweek 2016, and made it an excellent event.
The amount of work put in was as usual phenomenal and very much appreciated!
Thanks to all the friends we made or caught up with during our time in SA, such as Rod, Bob, Cynthia, Greg, Jason, John, Brad, Dave, Pete, Andrew, Gary, Martin and don't forget Charlie, just to name a few.
The racing is fantastic, but it's the people that make it that way.
I know I've missed a few names, but I hope to catch up with you all soon.
Cheers
Jamie & Paddy

Thanks Boys, I'll make sure this gets read out at a committee meeting. We don't get too many pats on the back so this will make a nice change.
Keep the shiney side up........

Big thank you to the starters, Peter and David Leikvold.

They continue to streamline the start line procedure and make Speed Week a better experience for us all.

As well as every one else involved in the running of our great event. :D

On Ya Jamie!
You & Paddy did more than your fair share too!
Thanks for your help!
It certainly was a great year, if not busy!
(I presume it was you guys who left my stubbie cooler that Paddy must have stolen, at the door of my workshop?
Thanks! I wondered where that had gone)
Cheers.

Peter and I get lots of kudos every year, probably because we are very visible. I take my hat off to the less visible volunteers, in this case I mean the people who bring everything we need from storage at the drivers camp and then take it back again while they watch everyone else leaving. The toilet volunteers get no attention unless something goes wrong. Thank everyone of them you see, we'd be in big trouble without them. The timers make our lives much easier, a couple of months before Speedweek we all got together at Paul Lynch's place to test the gear so there were no nasty surprises when it mattered. The interaction between timers and starters was very good and we have many ideas about new technology and procedures to make it much better next year.

I had a bumper crop of good volunteers this year, lots of them having previously helped out in 2015, so we are thinking that we need to enhance the talent pool by training everyone we get to be able to do all the jobs at the startlines. There were also plenty of talented volunteers in the timing van, so we are hoping to keep them and train them and others to do all those jobs with the knowledge required.

If you enjoyed whatever you did this year, do it again in 2017. I look forward to the time when we have a large pool of experienced and talented volunteers who specialise in just one area. We would eventually like to race something ourselves but we want to know that we have left the startlines in good hands.

Next year will be big for two reasons. The Americans are coming and we can probably expect more Aussie competitors to return as well. We need to be on our toes for this.

Cheers

Well said David ! (& Brad) 2 ends of the spectrum there!
David,
You blokes did such a good job when there was a call put out for helpers at the start line, 5 of us jumped to it, but to our surprise, the start line was empty & our help wasn't required (which was kinda cool cause we'd been flat out all week anyway!) I think so many runs where had, that by then everyone had either broken their ride or just had to "tweak" something for the next day.

For the one who was first there & the last to leave this year (2 whole weeks!) I gave it a real red hot go at helping out where I could & I can tell you (& not wanting any recognition) It was such a rewarding year for me personally !! I found that other members of our team (who ended up staying with me until the end too) also gave that much more which helps to make it all happen. We talked about it all & figured the more you put in.... the more you get out of it!!!............ it's as simple as that!

Well done Everyone!!

Thanks Rod, and well done for the two weeks,
Having track 2 dwindle away on Thursday afternoon was a real shame, such a wasted opportunity. We were getting 28 runs an hour at its best, if we'd had more competitors we could have run until the end. As it was, I believe we had record numbers of runs this year so if we get another 50 or 60 entrants next year we should still be running track 2 on Friday. We got no response when we asked for more competitors. It wasn't until we got back to the pits that afternoon at closing time that we realised that just about everyone was gone. I understand that for most people the budget is important but I can't help thinking a spare engine (or whatever else broke this year) is brought along next year so more people can run all week. Picking up a wrecked bike at the auctions would provide lots of bits to keep you running. Not so much for the cars, but a spare engine and gearbox, etc might make all the difference. Besides, it'll give you something to do other than pack up cursing your bad luck and the flies.

At a QTA meeting a while back I mentioned the idea of running a third track. The general consensus was "let's get the two tracks right first", which made a lot of sense. I'm game enough to predict that 2017 will see both tracks reach that point, primarily because of the technological improvements that the timing people have planned. I won't be the least bit surprised if we break 1,000 runs if we get no major delays.

Which brings me to my point. a third track will need a few alterations to what we currently have. Hear me out, these are just discussion points, not a fait accompli. I was thinking of bringing back the GPS system for the third track so that the timers don't need to be involved. That gear is expensive and we have no spares as it is. Next we need more rescue people. If we assembled a crew of volunteers who have some ideas or experience and could be brought up to speed by our rescue guys, a ute with three people and a whole bunch of extinguishers could monitor the GPS track and start to put out any fires before Southern Rescue arrived. They would not be allowed to remove an injured driver, that's what Scott is for. I also think the GPS track need only be two miles long and be used by novices and people testing for a problem. Perhaps the novices should be obliged to do three runs just to get the idea before they ventured onto track 2 and started the speed qualifying. This year the two start lines were far too far apart, in future they could be maybe only 30 metres apart so we can coordinate better. The end points of the tracks could stay where they are and the angle difference would be negiligible.

Don't bother with negative responses to the GPS track idea, this is an idea for 2018, we need discussions and solutions, not "it can't be done". It can. Remember Bonneville has had a novices track and four tracks in total.

Cheers

Ya never know David??
Some of us may have previous experience in rescue (I am ex CFS, had road crash & SES experience and base Helicopter rescue procedure training as I had life savers in my crew... a past life!) ........... I bet there is others out there that have had fire & rescue experiences or training (I'm not volunteering btw)
Training isn't impossible (I'd love to get more time away from the lake to upskill with scruitineering) but someone has to organise & run it!
Personally I think to have the 2 tracks running well is the priority & I'll never forget the old "test track" which just didn't work because it was unregulated. The GPS track certainly did run well for testing, but with the 2 main track, that has helped with rescue being in the "right spot"
Yes, dealing with major delays can be an issue. I'm not sure of what contingency plans for those, but I bet it's been discussed before.

This year certainly ran very well, partly I believe to preparation with things like timing, the organisation with Gregg & Carol seemed better (Gregg & I did talk about the system working well) just as with the event coordinators & Bob on the Lake helping set out too! So many people have input into this event..... If only people knew!
I was fortunate enough to be involved with set up this year (which was also an eye opener for me!)
The number of guys who had never been there before all pitched in & we got things done in no time!
I do think if the organisers knew who was coming to help, it would make life much easier for them but we made it all work anyway.

I'm not sure how much fuel I finally went through this year with the extra jerrys I took (I even had to use some race fuel from our car & ended up doing a dash back to Mt. Ive.... but I had ran out of beer too!) but geez, I did some miles running out cones, shifting people... even toilets etc. as mentioned, it certainly made for a busy but Very enjoyable year.
I now have an appreciation for putting up & taking down those shade frames for Tech & Merchandise (at least a few more of us now know how they go together) plus the complete set up & tare down of the event. What an awesome year!!

I hope we can be super organised for next year for the extra entrants we are expecting.
