"THE ENTERPRISE "

Post by ROSS BROWN »

This car is somewhat mystical !
To date I have found no fill view picture of the car completed without it's offensive front ornamentation.
So if somebody has one "please" post it.
We are dealing with a "CAT" and a black one at that.
Any pictures or information on this car would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much Greg
Well written article , Its a pity the whole endeavour turned into such a shit fight.
Could allways blame us Kiwis for that. :P
What is missing from the picture is the water tank X front guards ,from what I've read is that they were not fitted until the car reached Auckland
and that they were to be filled with all new secret fluid.......... "GLYCOL "

The ' ENTERPRISE 'engine itself is quite often miss quoted as a Rolls Royce Snchieder aero engine when it is in fact a W12 Napier Lion Snchieder engine.
Snchieder consequently been the aircraft it was pinched from.
Cambell did switch over to the V12 Rolls Royce of which only 19 were built and raised the record again

The next picture is of the cam box ( cant quite my head around the cam timing , its bevel driven to the exaust cam and then looks to have the inlet cam reveresed) maybe its just those olden day lobes but something doesn't look right to me. :?

G'Day Ross,
What amazes me is the size of the chassis rails!
Do you mean these thingys? They look as though they could hold a bit.

Very Very interesting picture Greg.
BY the look of the flooring that picture was taken on one of the sloops that they used to sail the car to and from Auckland as the roads were not of any standard to tow the car up there.
Also from the stains on the front cowl the chicken coop has been " on and gone " have to re read my books as to how that damage got on the inner side of that left hand guard (am sure its been documented )
YEP : them chassis rails were monsters , must be of cuts from the Habour bridge :P

Here's the press for ya "TOURIST ADVERTISMENT " wrong car ,wrong color

Back to the engine ..........
The Napier lion engines pedigree came from winning the Jacques Schneider Trophy ....
Three wins in Mitchell designed Supermarine Trophy planes and a world air speed record of 336mph in1929 with a Gloster VI
The power of the engines went from 450hp through to 1320hp VIIID
Both Campbells "Blue Bird " & the "Enterprise " claimed approx 1450hp

Image

The engines were fitted to a numerous amount of different aircraft (some pushing ,some pulling )
One experimental model carried three engines.(not pictured)

" Men and their flying machines " 8)

Dont forget the fantastic Napier Railton Race car . It also has a W12 engine .

Napier Railton

Another was the Napier bentley
Napier Bentley

napier built a lot of different engines in some amazing configurations such the Sabre (look that up to see a truly weird creation) and many were named after fighting tribes . So..there is even a Napier Maori aircraft engine ... Kiwi's will see the irony in that.

The car was sailed on a scow ( a type of floating barge without an engine, Just relying on Sail power) to Awanui Wharf which is still there . We were running one of our fishing boats out of there for quite a while in the 1970's. The roads didn't actually exist North of Whangarei and none were sealed until the late 1970's. I can still taste the dust from travelling from Keri Keri to Mangonui and paradise at Taipa where we would spend weeks at Christmas .
Dad drove an army truck from Auckland to Awanui in 1950 and there weren't any proper roads at all then.
To get to Ninety mile beach from Kaitaia is easy, just head down to Ahipara and drive out onto the beach. 8) .it would have been easy in 1932 and there were plenty of tracks in the bush in those days because of the mining going on .
Mining for Kauri gum,a fossilized tree resin used for varnish, was a big industry back then.

The S4, is a classic piece of design

part insect, part sci-fi but mostly a great example of form following function ............of course it was part of the Spitfire bloodline.

................THE FIRST OF A FEW............

Is a black and white film , based around RJ Mitchell ,the designer of the supermarine and spitfire air craft..
As shown by the engine covers, all the early supermarines ran the "NAPIER LION " engine and the last to run was the "MERLIN"
Get through the first five minutes war propaganda jaba jaba and you will find the film to be a ...Jolly good show chaps...
