Thought I would give the bike another start just coz I could. Well that didnt work. My spark had run away again.

I unplugged my tricky you bute programmable ignition that I blew up when tacking my chambers and sent to the Czech Republic to get repaired and plugged in my standard one back in and hey presto we have spark. Reversed the operation and still spark. WTF??

I heated the ignition with a hot air gun and cooled it with a frozen ice block but couldnt get it to fail again. POO.

Not willing to take a gamble ive ordered a new one from another maker. Not the ignitions fault but sending it back for repairs is out of the question. Cost 1/2 the price of a new one last time by the time you took shipping and fees into account.

This is what Ive bought. http://www.ignitech.cz/en/vyrobky/dccdip2/dccdip2.htm

So 10 days and ill see how it goes. Lesson learnt. Disconnecting the battery isnt enough to protect the delicate internals of these ignition modules. Always disconnect all connections before welding.

The electronic spike thing. Welding. Unplugging a battery charger ( without turning it off ) synthetic clothes ie static from them is not taken seriously enough
Lots of stuff have more shielding than they used to , it is not a common thing but is a real issue , even using a test light on some
Electronics can spike it To be useless
I have raised this on some other forums an been shot down But what do I know Don't answer that
Your problem is painful. Better now that @ the White dyno

Hey Harkey

Yep valuable but expensive lesson learnt. After Waikerie I made sure that I could fit the original CDI unit if I had any more problems so I have a plan B.

I wasnt sure it was the Zeel but wasnt going to take a chance. Again not the Zeel's fault but mine. Perhaps they missed a fried component when it was returned for repairs? Intermittent problems are usually the hard ones to track down.

Ignition turned up yesterday. :D and ive got a 4 day weekend coming up. Hope to get it all wired up and running.

It came with a couple of ignition maps ready to be uploaded and a good manual on a CD.

Ignition is wired up and the bike is running. :D

Everything but the tacho is working so still some sorting out to do. Shift light and rev limiter both work so if I dint get it sorted its not a real problem.

Got to say that programming via the lap top is a lot easier than with the small hand controller that the last system used, although the newer Zeels had the option to use a laptop as well.

Had a bit of a setback. I tried to get some more flow through my carbys by drilling out the internal fuel supply galleries. Started out at 4mm ended up at 6mm and daylight. So new carby and stopped at 5mm this time. I wanted 1 ltr per minute out of the carb but settles for 900 ml. started at 800.

The new carby was similar but not quite the same. Seems they dont make the old version any more. The slide has a groove on one side and a pin in the bore to stop it rotating. They are on the opposite side in the new version. Slides are different as well so had to knock out the pin and relocate it on the other side of the bore. Now the idle adjuster is on the wrong side. Easy fix, take the adjuster out of both carbys.

Anyway I got it going again today so back on coarse.

Also picked up an action cam so I dont have to try and remember what the instruments were doing. Mounts were pretty average so I knocked up a new one. Heres a pic of what it will record. EGT gauge, top of tacho, shift light and temp gauge. As well as the salt, or in this case the back wall of the shed.

Another less than successfully Speed Week. At least I got 3 1/2 runs in this time. Started out very fat with a conservative tune and did a 114 mph run on a 109 record. I couldnt get the bike to rev as soon as I put load on it. Wouldnt rev past 10000, so i leaned it out a bit. Still the same so I added a bit of timing. Same. Removed the carbys and lowered the float levels and leaned it out a bit more. EGT still safe but still wouldnt rev out under load. Just a little bit leaner and it was all over for another year.
I think that I had too much compression so it wouldnt rev, not having any tuning experience with methanol I thought it was the tune.
It was suggested that the detonation was caused by too hot a plug as the porcelain was cracked. Thinking about it that makes sense to me now. The fat mixture masked the det until it was too late.

Ya get that. Ill be back next year still in the Fuel class but not Methanol. I havnt got the time or money to teach myself how to tune it.

Back in the shed working on stuff that dosent cost me anything but time as I have plenty of that but no $$$. I got layed off 1 week before Speed Week. Gives me a chance to do some mods to the bike while I look for a job so I can rebuild the engine.

After talking to Stuart Hooped , Worlds Fastest Velocette http://www.worldsfastestvelocette.com/ about my aero, or lack off, Ive had a rethink and am going to get a bit more serious about making my bike go quick and worry less that it looks like a RGV. My goal has been to keep it looking as stock as I could an go quick.

Here's a pic with the tail off, the rear section I fabbed up to hold the TYGA tail piece.

Image

This is the new version to hold the new tail that I will be fabbing shortly. I will be sitting 120mm lower.

Image

After the new rear was tacked together I had a trial sit with the RGV tank on and thought I was still sitting up too high.

Image

So tried it without the tank. Now were talking.

Image

So new tank time. Here's the beginnings of the new tank. I wanted to keep it looking like a bike tank and a little bit like the original shape. I must have watched 1,000,000 hours on tank making before I found an old retired tank maker that I could relate to his methods.

Hey Dave
Looks like you will be in 'A'
Why not take advantage of the wheelbase you are allowed to use.
In the photo your back is too curved. The flatter the better.
You could add some length to the swingarm-- 150-200mm and move your seat back and maybe lower. Also move the footpegs back
which will help with straightening your back.
The longer length will help with the seat shape.
The tank will be good-- I would aim to be able to rest my chin on the tank

cheers Bones

Hey Bones, yep I think A will be the go. The post sticking up out the back of the bike in the pics with me sitting on it is the max length fairing past the rear wheel. If I extend the wheel base I will have trouble getting it into the van, its a struggle as it is, thats why im thinking A instead of MPS. The pegs would be better back, thats a good idea and ill get onto making some more mounts when the tanks finished.

Dave,
Maybe modifying the van is the better solution. Design the bike mods you want and then adjust that beautiful old caravan to suit it. The bike is the important thing, not the van.

One of the reasons I say this is we had trouble this year loading all the crap for the four of us this year into my faithful old kart trailer (it's 3D Tetrus) and the trailer broke a spring leaf, which we fixed in Port Augusta on the way home. It is just too small for what we need so next year we will have yet another grand plan that will hopefully make Speedweek easy and comfortable. I need a trailer for my Formula Vee so maybe I will make it big enough to be an asset for Speedweek as well. You'd think that after five Speedweeks I would have myself properly organised, maybe number six will be the lucky one.

Cheers

I have found moving the Seat position too far back on the RGV creates a Bike that is unstable ....

Hey Dave, have you got the WRX STI engine for the V yet? You need to make the trailer big enough to get that down to Speed Week? Van has already been modified internally to get the bike in, If the bike was made longer it could still fit its just going to be harder to load and unload.

Pete, I forgot about the handling problems you had when you changed weight distribution. Perhaps I need to extend the swing arm as well so the seat can go back further.

Gives me something to ponder on.

No STI engine yet, but I do have my '95 model VFR 750 sitting in the shed next to the Vee. I can't ride it anymore because of a neck problem and it is hardly worth selling so maybe it can be morphed into a J/BFS one of these years. That would need a trailer at least 20ft long so maybe I'll build it for next year and use it as a better start line van as well.

Just a thought about your RGV. Google "Znug Design recumbent motorcycle". I think that could be a great design. Weird, but way cool and potentially very aerodynamic. Maybe I'll do that with the VFR bits and pieces.

Cheers
