Yeah if you go richer with petrol its safer
Go richer with Methanol it runs a bit cooler
Go richer with Nitro?????????????????????
In top gear only, I like that idea. :) :)

Found it interesting reading a similar thread on Landracing, , the old school racers were more of the opinion the only problem with nitro was the methanol  and 85% + was less troublesome

Back up the thread a bit....
Boyracer :
Victor Brays boys should know better  unless it was a razz :P
Two things about Nitro methane..... Not that you should be washing your hands in it .. but nitro is oily to touch (simple test )
Nitro is clear to look at.. If you see green Nitro  It is becoming unstable and quite capable of exploding by itself (keep ya distance)

Momec 3 :
Go richer with Nitro.... severe detonation, cylinder heads get lifted off and blocks get cracked.

Greg :
YES.. 85% plus can be run .... "BUT" Nitro is compression ratio sensitive, At 85% you would have to reduce the compression ratio down to 6:1 the other big factor with running that much Nitro is "You are either on or off the throttle" feathering the throttle to try and control wheel spin is a NO NO. The engine will have a melt down

Am not in the ideal situation myself to be running a lot of nitro ... Currently my engine is 13.5 :1 compression ratio were somewhere between 10 and 12 would be more suited to a 20% mix. The needle and seats in the carburators are also border line on the volume of fuel that needs to be delivered to the engine, but others can be sourced, The emulshion tube is already at 3.2mm. not much left to drill out

In reallity :To run a NITRO ENGINE yove got to be thinking Nitro engine from the begining

Still somewhat numb from the event of "NOTHINGNESS"
Thought it time to spit out the journey for those that would like to come for the ride..

Never went quite rite from the start.....
All packed up and getting in the truck... for those of you that don't no. Cousin Mark upgraded us from a 80,s something Mitsubishi ute to a Ford F250 8) The neighbours spoke there usuall sermon of behave yourselves and be carefull......
Dennis in the drivers seat and myself laid back in the passengers with feet up yabbering "how good is this" and off we went........... only to return ten minutes later because I'd forgotten to take any money......... :?
Next stop: Drop the dog off and pick up the methanol... DRAMA 2
No one home........ this was organized with some of my speedway friends about 3 weeks earlier, problem is in the speedway world but have noticed it worse in the LSR world is that when we get together which is not that often.Every body including myself, wants to talk and nobody really listens, although peices of information do get absorbed. Quite often I get a phone call after one of these " yabberathons " asking what I was actually jabbering about and visa versa.
Anyway.... sort the "DOG" problem out later ....priority one was the methanol .. so over the fence we go...
Now all of my life my dealings with older women seem to have been from the heavy end of a broom  (mother included , though her personal weapon of choice is the "Kettle cord" broom came second only , because us kids would hide the kettle cord when we were playing up.. Anyway.. while trying to releave a 44 gallon drum of it's contents AROUND THE CORNER IT CAME : Armed with a broom and screeching some scotish battle cry and aiming to take it first swipe Kim's MUM realized who it was ..... still with broom at waiste height and still with the raised scotish voice.
WOT THE ECK EER YA DOON HERE......

I/M STEALING METHANOL ,WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE...

I'M FEEDING THE ANIMALS......

WHERE ARE THEY I QUIZED.....

YEPPON.......

THEY'RE SPOSED TO BE HERE ,LOOKING AFTER MY DOG....

THEY ARE NOT HERE !.........

DO YOU WANT TO LOOK AFTER MY DOG....

NO....WHO TURNED THE LIGHT ON IN THE LIZARD CAGE.....
( I'll spare ya's the rest of it )
30 minutes later we were back in the truck 60 litres of methanol better off , but still one DOG...
( Denis' es turn....)
Ross.. No dogs at the lake! what are you going to do..
Not wanting to travel back through the city traffic, said I'll work it out later.....

The "TOOTH ACHE"
IT started with me and by the end of the week Dennis had a dose of it as well :x
Now this had been niggling me on and of for a couple of weeks but seemed to be under control ..
Problem was : From a trip to the Dentist 3 or 4 years ago the Dentist had prescribed these special pills of which I'd been treating like magic beans . Every time a tooth would look like giving trouble in would go a magic bean , which would then keep the tooth at baye for about 4 months .... situation was ... there was only one been left and it was at home

The journey continued ..... Tiny and others had warnerd us of the pestalance plagues down his way and into them we headed .... at times it was like being in a cross between an old war movie and a starwars game , the " DRAGON FLIES " were the big hitters , some of them suckers were seven inches long before they hit the truck as four inches of them was still sticking straight out of the grille when we looked.. there was also Grasshoppers and Crickets and some other suicidle insect that we couldn't work out what it was. then there was the "MOSQUITOS " stopped at a truck stop about 100 kms short of Wilcania on the second night, the mosquitos were so thick we decided to move on through part 2 of a starwars episode the other side of Wilcania and try our luck.. was somewhat better .. Dennis'es turn outside, he slept on a mattress with a mosquito net and rag in which he claimed was a blanket and also a tarp. he was also armed with the only can of bug spray. I got to sleep in the truck ... Quite simple ... wind up windows and shut the doors kill all the bugs hand can over to Dennis. 3'OCLOCK in the morning the dog is snapping and I'm slapping, episode 3 of star wars was now on in the truck.. how they got in there I dont no.... Morning came as I watched Dennis get up and throw an empty can of spray into a bin.. There was no need to ask how anyone slept..

The journey continues ........ with pictures...

The dog was still an issue!
Dennis plonked his butt in the drivers seat and asked were too.
ADELAIDE was the reply...
Were not going that way .... was the shortened version of his reply..
BROTHER BILL'S joint is in Adelaide and you need a wash!!!
We made the city outskirts just in time for afternoon peak hour.... situation being is that we had to drive clean through the middle of the city and out the other side to get to Bill's joint. Thats when the trailer had it's first issue. After filling with fuel somewhere in the middle of town Dennis gunned it out of the service station as to beat the cars coming from the traffic lights, the trailer didn't quite make the driveway and had to jump the gutter, while checking his mirrors to see what sought of distance he had from the then following cars he spotted something out of the ordinary and exclaimed that we were on "FIRE" . If anything is going to stop ya thinking about ya TOOTH its the word "FIRE"
STOP I Yell

I CAN'T THERES CARS EVERYWHERE.....

UP A DRIVEWAY .. ANYTHING JUST STOP....

Crash, bang, clunk and on the footpath we were ... out the door and running before my feet hit the ground past the truck and then to the back of the trailer... "WHAT FIRE" I spit
IT WAS ON FIRE.... came the reply
WERE.....
ALL OUT THE BACK
With a quick check undearneath the trailer the culprit revealed itself.. the left hand spring had slid half out of it's guide and jammed when the gutter got jumped this loading the right hand wheel onto its guard this causing smoke from a rubbing tyre which prompted the "FIRE" word. Jacks and tyre levers to the situation and we were back in the traffic snarl ten minutes later..
BROTHER " BILL "
Had just finished mowing the lawn when we showed up unanounced and had his head down behind a car doing something to the mower..... BANG CRASH CLUNCK RATTLE is what he heard as the trailer once again jumed the gutter....He new who it was instantly without even lifting his head..... "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE " was the astonished greeting... not wanting to spring the dog issue on him straight away . JUST VISITING...... was the easiest answer ..
YOUR FULL OF IT...... COME IN ANYWAY..... AND WHO'S THIS was his stand offish reply.
DENNIS..... I say
While shaking his hand "Brother Bill "tells Dennis of his pity for him and would he like a beer ! ...ahhh Brotherly love...

FRIDAY MORNING..... Had not rained the whole trip and still didn't look like it but things were about to change...
Brother BILL escorted us the easy way through the city that morning and off up the freeway we travelled (finally releaved of the dog ) slowly the sky went from blue to grey ,and then to drizzle and then the rain.. on we plugged finally to Port Augusta to pick up supplies and then to Iron Knob.. It was back to drizzle at Iron Knob and before going to the turn of Dennis gave me the 2 dollar tour of Iron knob ... service sation is closed and wearing the work of vandels. the rest of the town seems somewhat lived in ... and somewhat tider than it had been in previous years ,,so Dennis explained.
THE ROAD IN...... stopped at the ROAD CLOSED sign and read it ....two roads were closed and two were open to 4WD only after checking the map we worked out we were good to go.. and we did...... 10kms into the trip and on the top of a rise I said stop the truck this is maddness. Dennis did not need convincing..... We were sitting in a truck with a 7.3 V8 turbo diesel that would happily climb a tree if you asked that of it, and we were going to make it in without a to much trouble ... but who else behind us was in the same situation .... It was hammering with rain and the road was steadilly getting worse ... turn around was the general consensus in the truck and wait at Iron Knob till the morning.
! And that we did !
pictures soon.....

Dennis had the luxury of inside the truck to sleep and I dug a hole between all the gear and crap under the hard deck ,squeezed out the rag of a mattress and slept quite soundly , got woken only once to the sound of rain at about 3 O'clock it was lite and only lasted about an hour.
Saturday morning came and once again saw us standing in front of the road closed sign... Myself I don't have a mobile phone . (detest the idea of the things  ) Dennis has two ..... and they both play up like two bob watches, but one at the time was working and with that we were waiting for a phone call from Brother BILL in Adelaide whom was watching the DLRA forum for news.
While waiting three more vehicals showed up.. and hell or high water these boy's and girls were going in.... 2 landcruisers and 1 Delica all 4WD. after a quick chat about the obvious , they all piled back into there respective vehicals and with a "ho ho ho " of up the road they went.... sought of left Dennis and myself standing there clucking about the chicken feathers begining to grow out the top of our heads  waited about another half an hour we did ... then finally made up our chicken clucking minds to go in.. Up the first hill we were travelling when coming back the other way was a 4WD towing a covered in bike trailer.... It turned out to be the owner and his family of the Corraberra station at the top of the first hill on there way to the motorcross racing in Wyalla . They rang the Mt Ive station for us to see of any news of a cancellation. During that time Brother BILL also rang and told us we were still good to go. (but your going to cop some rain) the story back from Mt Ive station was the same . Had this all happened 15 minutes later the stories would have been different and we wouldn't have been out of phone range....

This is what we faced
Image

An hour into the trip we had caught up to Delica and one Landcruiser the Delica was doing it steady but the cruiser was struggling and sitting sideways across the road when first spotted them .. they all made it in...
Ten minutes into the trip and this is what the mud build up on the trailer looked like.

Image

The strangest things appear in the bush (for those of you that don't know ) the first is a telephope box and that is situated outside Siam Station. (sorry no photo )
The second is a submarine situated next to the Mt Ive station turn off.

Image

Apart from the trailer door coming close to falling off because yours truly forgot to shut it properly the rest of the journey was relativly smooth with two giant deep water ponds just before the lake that succesfully cleaned both the undercarridge of the car and trailer.

Next the Lake...

Yep Chris, aint that the oddest thing... Was asking Dennis during the trip if something was before or after the submarine, as I seen a picture of it before hand ... Dennis an 8 time veteran of the salt exclaimed there was no such thing...... I figured that after driving that 80s something ford ute this far up the dirt road by this distance he would have had his eyes half rattled out of his head  he was just as amazed as me to see it.
Anyway :
Drove up past the canteen and parked in the adjacent paddock , jumped straight out of the truck and B lined it for the lake ... walked out into what was about the middle distance between the two banks and took this photo looking straight down .... thats about 2inches of water and about 15mm of red dirt sitting on top of the salt .. stirring up the dirt revealed the hard surface of the salt underneath. (sorry didn't take a photo of that  )

Image

How the surface repairs itself from here I don't know ..... BUT I'm guessing that once the water is gone some of the dirt is blown of by the wind and the salt grows through the rest of it .... certainly will be drilling a hole in the surface next year to see what happened...
Once back to land I was greeted by Peter Healy and Co from the two short men racing team of which I'd met a couple of weeks before in Brisbane at the pre tech inspection BBQ (RGV250) they gave us the 2 dollar tour of the salt bush camp and told us that they'd had gotten there earlier in the week ,,,,,when the world was still beautifull..
While jacking up the trailer and removing the opposite spring from the trailers first issue and refitting it. (this one had come all the way out and was sitting on its holder so no smoke this time.) Two more characters showed up for a chat..
and an interesting pair they were. Ken Robinson & Troy Bodley ... they were campaigning a Suzuki Hyabusa for the week, during the conversation they informed me that they were building a motorcycle streamliner and in it they were putting two Hyabusa engines and were already at rolling chassis stage. (found this quite interesting I did ) this must be bike that Grumm had recently inspected.....
Then it started ........ EVERY ONE TALKING AND NO ONE LISTENING...... loved it :D
One thing is for sure .. there's gonna be a STREAMLINER BATTLE in AUS in the next couple of years :D :D :D 8)

This next picture was taken the next morning a bit out from the cove behind the salt bush camp.

Yep
Ken Robinson & Troy Bodley were the guys building the two engine streamliner
Quite a nice unit
Very different to yours
You should see Ken's shed, being the second generation of his family in the motor cycle industry he has some interesting stuff in there
G
They make it
I make it work
