Honda MG & MF 750

Post by Johno Senior »

Well here we go ! where it stops no one knows :D
Been thinking about building a MG or MF 750 from my old classic K3 1973 Honda cb 750.
Kind of a difficult task as the Pirie boys have set up the benchmark in those classes which is likely to be too good for my Honda at 149.7mph. Given the best Honda CR 750 works bikes and later M3 bikes at Daytona were timed on the bituman with full fairings at around 150mph to get a naked bike on loose salt to come close will be a challenge. The classic 750 suzy waterbottles have the ability to produce more power than the old classic cb 750 sohc. If I was smart and wanting to run a classic 750 I should stop what I'm doing and build a waterbottle , will be like getting into the ring with Mike Tyson you know whats coming but cant change the result. BUT I love my old Honda and do it for pride and entertainment.
I'll start working on the pics
ciao

Start with an old frame from the scrap pile.
It is badly rusted and looks bent, some wheels from an yamaha XJ900
two old engines donated to the cause by a friend Gazz.

Some brackets and bits to cut off and clean up the frame........I'll leave the large side stand lug on as after the salt I may use it as a street bike and need a side stand.

The frame looks really rusty so I,ll coat the inside of the tubes with this kill rust then get it grit blasted and two pack primer.

So drilled a hole in the headstock area and filled the frame with a syringe and squirted the kill rust stuff in , then turned the frame all over the place to get a good coat on the inside .....hopefully

Just in case the old rusty frame is no good I,ll prep another frame just in case , here it is on my bench jig set up to make sure its all straight. its a 1978 K8 frame with a small rust problem that I should be able to fix.

Where the frame is joined by spot welding on the front down tubes I brazed the joint up to stop the flexing ......hopefully

Nice work. Love the idea of using an engine stand as a bike stand.

Whats under the bike covers in the background?

back in the day we used to modify the top frame rails so as to be able to remove the topend from the motor with it still in the frame,, being a race bike this is a handy mod to have done, with the rails there you cant even remove the tappett cover without taking the entire motor out off the frame,,,
im not a honda man, but, have a softspot for the old 4's, 8) ,, all the best with ya build, :) ,
yeah, i am also wondering whats under them covers  ,,

These are under the covers :D

Re the top frame tubes I have ordered some frame splice kits from Cycle X in the US, I agree with you makes life hard pulling the donk in and out.
Especially as I suffer valve spring paranoia. I'm planning to back the rockers off the springs when the bike sits around for a period of time so I will need the splice kit for sure. the springs are beehive design treated like the nascar soft centre wire with titanium locknuts, also have 3 different cams to try while at the salt so will be a working holiday :D :D :D
