Hi Guys,

I thought I'd do a quick introductory post as we are heading out to race on the Salt for the first time this year.

We will have 2 motorcycles with us, in the Modified Production 50cc and Modified Production 100cc categories. One is a brand new Skyteam Ace, the other a 1960's Yamaha YL1.

Both bikes are nearing readiness for racing, with all unnecessary components removed, lower handlebars for better airflow, carby, exhaust and CDI rework on the Skyteam, custom made expansion chambers on the YL1 and all the necessary safety work aside from steering dampers (still waiting on these to arrive).

We are not pushing the boundaries of the bikes too far this time around, just building bikes which will safely make a few passes at a good speed for their categories to get a feel for the event and riding on salt.

We are planning on camping and are keen on any advice not already in the info forum regarding racing and camping at the event.

I am in the process of sorting tyres for both bikes at the moment, and due to how skinny the wheels are the highest speed rating I can find is S. Given that this is 180kph (a good 50kph higher than we are aiming for from the faster of the 2 bikes) can anyone confirm if this will be acceptable?

Here's the bikes as they stand today, as you can see there is still a good bit of fettling to go:

I recon you will be fine.
You will have plenty of performance increase with those tyres
I just checked the rule book and it does say H minimum . Maybe a call to Ross Brown (head bike scrutineer)

" S " rated will be fine for your classes..
But if you are looking for odd rated tires , check the "AVON " catelouges.

I was uncertain as there is no record in either category at the moment, but given that even the Special Construction Partial Streamlining 100cc has only hit 150ish km/h I was hoping that 180km/h tyres would be fine. There is however a possibility that the Yamaha will hit 70mph, which would mean a H rated tyre according to the rulebook.

Avon has nothing above S rating in these widths (2.75 and 3 x 17)

Also, with regards to 2 strokes and oil, are there any preferred/not preferred 2 stroke oils for racing on the salt?

I like the Ester Based Fully Synthetic in the Engine. It's a personal preference thing as long as it's Good Quality and matches your type of set up and the Fuel you run.

I run Race Gas and still have the Oil Injection so I use Fuchs Silkolene Comp 2 Plus and have it on the "Rich" side.

Castrol MTX Gear Oil in the Gearbox/Clutch seems to work well in the RGV.

There are other options if you run Pre Mix.

When you buy your oil make sure it is rated as injection oil. Premix oil is too thick for the injection and you will do an engine. Most injection oil is w30 and premix is w50.

As Pete said any brand name oil, the best you can afford. Hardly worth saving $20 on oil for all the time/$$ invested.

Caster based oils--
Castrol 747 or R30 for older engines that don't rev so hard.
R30 is good for TZ 350s and TZ 750s.
Don't forget to use lots 20:1.
Don't believe what is written on some containers-- 40:1 might work for a mx bike- no good for a road race bike -- and death for a salt bike.
The more oil you can put in the greater the HP will be. Jet richer because of the leaner fuel mixture.
I run the YZ80 at 20:1 with rf 100
If you are going to use the oil injection R30 and 747 are too thick to pump

Yeah what Dave and Bones said, that is why I run the Comp Plus 2 it's for Oil Injection systems.

I've just finished making race-spec chainguards (photos later tonight).

I notice that there is a comment about 'Optional Exhaust Systems' in the Modified Production rules. I assume I am allowed to make up any sort of custom exhaust that I like in this category so long as it does not point towards the rider or salt or back tyre and does not extend past the rear end of the back tyre? I can't see any other comments in the rules relating to exhaust so I assume that this is acceptable, just wanted to check as the word 'optional' stood out to me.

yes any exhaust you like....wrt the rules which are as you have posted . good luck and go for it

If the exhaust is for the Yam, ALL 2 STROKES MUST BE LOUD.

Definitely passes that test The Yamaha currently features a pair of custom made expansion chambers built to 1960's Yamaha racing specifications.
