ΩT/SII Gas Turbine Streamliner

I thought it was time I posted a build diary that will hopefully keep me motivated to work at finishing what has been a many year dreaming and designing project, and may interest some people.

Well firstly the engine, it’s a Rolls Royce Nimbus engine from a Westland Wasp anti submarine helicopter that was used by many countries and during the Falklands war.

The engine is rated at between 720 and 1050 shaft horsepower but has a few issues for use in a streamliner. The power output is underneath the engine, points forward and governed to a maximum output speed of 2250rpm.

It has been several years of trying different ideas, until eventually I ended up remanufacturing the gearbox to get the output in the right direction and at a better speed. Anyone interested in all the full saga of building the gearbox can look here:

Well all the work on the engine is basically done and it’s alive.

At the moment I have sent the car drawings to Bob Ellis who has pointed me in the right direction with changes to make sure it fits within the rules and for safety.

I have sent the body details off to Woody (David Woodruff) in the US who is going over the aero details and I hope to have that finalised in the next few weeks.

As I get more done I will post it here.

Cheers
Ian
