Front Grille

Post by Gus »

Well After getting an original grille off Jeff, a little panel beating and bolting it up, it was looking better than ever. However as we are entering in Altered class it is a requirement that the grill is blocked off. So rather than destroying the mint 36 grille we have, i thought i would try and make a fiberglass copy.

So i took the original grille, covered it with aluminium tape to block off all the holes and make it smooth. then used plasticine to fill in the missing pieces of trim. Coat of wax and a little release agent and it was ready to go.

And this is the result after 2 days work. Its not brilliant but its ok for my first ever experience with fiberglass moulding and will do the job.

I'm now contemplating making a one piece hood as it will be simpler to secure as opposed to the original 4 piece hood unless we put a bucket load of clips into it.

And the roof is nearly done

Post by Gus »

Well it only took a light skim of poly filler to make the zipper lines disappear. Quite proud of the outcome considering the team's experience with roof chops is zero. Worked late on monday night and managed to get a coat of white primer filler onto it. Cheers Joe!

Still plenty more blocking to do on the fenders and doors, gonna move onto the windows next as we can see we will need to weld in a few tabs or something to do the job right.

Fantastic effort. The feeling you get when you have a seemingly insurmountable problem, think about it and sleep on it for days and come up with a solution is priceless. I think that feeling of anxiety with final exhilaration is what keeps our minds active and youthful. It also provides a release from our day to day (boring) activities. That shot at night into the door of the shed is worth mounting. It is memories like that you can happily take to your grave.

As Gaz said. Step into the shed. Sit on the couch or say bugger it, just step in the shed. .... Way better than telly. We are getting a bit excited to see this on the salt too Gus..

couple more pics

Post by Gus »

We bought a trailer this week and have also been sponsored with a tow vehicle as well so things are going well for actually being able to get there. Still way more to do on the car yet and already we are starting make "next year" decisions as we will most definitely run out of time if we don't cut a few things from the wish list. The team is all back at work for the next couple weeks so things have come to a stop again. Work, it always gets in the way of things.

Darren is in full PPE today, most unusual. Hes removed the original boot latches that we were thinking could cause issues with the chute and installing hood pins. I doubt we will go fast enough to require the chute this year but its nice to have i guess if the car plays up, just have to remember its there in the heat of the moment.

Yep that's the radiator, it was the right price and fits perfect behind the grille.

And yes its always good to get off the couch and achieve something but i reckon by the time speed week comes around we will all be absolutely hanging for a day on the lounge with fridge full of beer.

Haha, correct. Seeing your progress is so fantastic, a word from the experienced, (I'm SURE Gaz and the others will agree). Plan now for what to pack and take to the lake. Allow 2 Days to pack and prepare before you leave because it takes every bit of that. Keep at it.

The progress continues

Post by Gus »

Well despite being at work my brother has let himself into the "Terraplane" club house and got some more straightening done on the roof chop, looking quite good I reckon considering what I did to it with that 5 inch grinder. So far all its cost us a few wild turkey cans, but I have this feeling that I will be repaying him for this for years somehow. Still great to see some progress whilst i'm stuck out in the middle of the Timor sea.

That first coat of gloss can be quite disappointing after hours of filling and rubbing back. I know I was first time around. Looks like you have done a great job of getting it straight.
Remember a roof chop makes the roof line even more visible to the discerning eye. Job well done.

Well a busy couple of days, crossed a few more things off the list. Big expense for the team has been the new transport trailer. Body off the chassis, hopefully for the last time this season. Mounts for the fuel lines sorted and cage mounts. Also managed to find the original chassis number, so it was time for a fresh coat of black.

Motor is close to finished and we aim to put it on the dyno this week and give it a basic tune up. Keep it simple this year has been out approach, so its the run of the mill small block chev out to 406 cubes. We have made some progress on some basic headers, we were kind of forced to do this as nothing we could find off the shelf would fit the old Terraplane, we were hoping to get lucky and save a bit of time.

The Terraplane made it into its first ever publication, nothing new for the blokes that follow the build on the forum but still cool. Cheers to Jordan and the FORGED magazine.

Headers ended up being just a set of custom shorties. I know that's not ideal but it was all the time we could afford to spend on this job this year. There will be another couple of feet of 3" coming out through the fenders yet, so while not optimal, it should still be a half reasonable high RPM set of pipes.

The window tabs have all been welded in, tedious job but had to be done. We have 4mm polycarbonate for the windows, yet to be cut. As the windows are all less than 300mm high we feel this should be more than ample. We plan on using some black silicone sealant around the edges. Still plenty more to go yet but we are pushing hard and close to bolting the body back to the chassis for final assembly and paint.
