It just feels mean.

Some great lines in those cage members in the boot.

Just make sure you get that engine note to match!!

I last heard the engine fire up over 10 years ago when it was in Gaz's Falcon 2 door "Ovakil" - some old blokes out there may remember it - it sounded pretty good back then and that was with mufflers. We'll have to invest in earplugs as the car will have no mufflers at all, and nowhere to put them!

You've also got to take into account the smell of the exhaust - I love the smell of BP100 first thing in the morning!

I also get comments about the "old car smell" that my XY has. People may not remember the hassles of driving an old car but they all remember the smells....

Time for another update

Post by Lynchy »

I've just got back to Bris Vegas after 2 weeks holidays with the wife and kids down in Sydney. I got out to Big Gaz's for a short visit and took a few more pictures for an update.

Whenever I go into the shed that the Shaguar is in I'm blown away by how low the car is. So this time I got Gaz to stand in front of the car to give an idea of scale. Here's the first pic:

Image

Big Gaz is a little shorter than me at about six foot 1 (his nickname was self inflicted during our first visit to the salt - you know how they always want a name up at the canteen for dinner? - and Gary wanted people to think more of him......) but the car as I have mentioned previously is around a metre tall (approx 40 inches).

The car was chopped about 3 inches originally because it would look cool and effectively the car has been channeled about 6 inches. I say channeled as the fitting of a rear clip has lowered the rear quite a bit and the gearbox location and tailshaft loop require the tailshaft tunnel to be raised by about 6 inches. The front suspension will be lowered as far as it can go but will still have a small amount of travel.

Anyway, all of this is old news - what progress has there been?

BG has slotted the correct wheel / tyre combo into position to see how much room he has and where the tubs will go. This also determines the track width required for the diff (the diff will be a 9" 2.5:1 ratio with a spool. It will also have floating axles, I think 31 spline). As the car will be drag raced part time for giggles it needs to be able to accomodate wider rubber. In fitting wider rubber a wider rim will be needed. Wider rims will typically be dished out rather than in and therefore the salt combo needs a track as wide as possible (to look good) as well as allowing additional room for drag wheels / tyres. The car will not be a serious 1/4 mile weapon as you can see from the latest photo of the cage.

Image
Image

There is a lot of steel in the rear that will make it a bit too heavy to be a serious drag car but safety is a serious issue. The cage is made up with a 2" central hoop and 1.75" bars in mild steel. From hearing of the two recent deaths in cars with roll cages (Brocky and Porter?) you can't make cars too safe. There's not much chance of a side on collision on the salt but the worst case scenario would be a side roll or end over end. We hope the car will be strong enough to withstand this and hope to never find out.

I didn't include a shot of the rear of the cage in the boot as this has been shown before. There is a bit more work to do in the boot with gusseting to be inserted between the cage and the rails of the clip. The fuel cell will site between the rails of the clip with high pressure pumps on one side of the boot and a big battery on the other. BG is talking about having another extinguisher set up for the boot in case of a fire at that end of the car.

I've included a shot that shows the roof as you can make out how the roof was sectioned for the chop:

Image

However this shot does not do justice to the amount of work that went into lowering the lid. The rear buttresses / C Pillars were both sunk down till they looked right and you can only see this from inside the car's boot. It looks so good you reckon the factory should have made them this way!

So where to from here?

The cage needs to be finished off. Gaz has Craig (the cage builder) coming over for a day sometime soon to assist with this as well as sheeting out the interior and his son will come over as well to bash out some dents in the body.

Following this the car will get sandblasted and hit with POR15 to try to slow down corrosion (it is a Jag after all) followed by some more paint. The interior was to be painted white to assist with visibility - matt black was discussed but rejected as it would be too hot - as the side windows are to be dark tinted lexan glare may not be too much of a problem. The exterior will be Ford "Toxic" with some blackouts here and there. There are no sponsors so the car may be fairly clean outside.

Then the list:
Fit lexan windscreen and side screens + roof and window rails
Fit fuel system
Wire up the whole car
Fit extinguisher system
Sort out the front end
Fit seat and belts
Blah blah blah

Then the "simple" job of dropping the engine in and getting it all running will follow on from all this........

Will it be ready in March????????????

Stay tuned.............................

A bit more has happened

Post by Lynchy »

The fuel cell has arrived - 12 Gallons = 45 litres should be enough for a couple of runs...this is getting set up at the moment as well as a battery mount in the boot.

The taxi bars in the cage have been set up for the harnesses, sheet metal is getting bent and fitted to the rear clip. The push bar / parachute nount is nearing completion. The roll cage is almost at the point where it can be final welded into position. Following this the tailshaft tunnel will be cut out and a new one fabricated.

Tin worms

......after working on Jags my tip would be to buy an Alpha 33 or a Lada Niva and park it next to the Jag in the shed just before the sun goes down. After about 3 hours race in there as fast as you can and drive it straight outa there to the tip or at least a mile away from your shed .With any luck the Alpha( or Lada) will have proved to be irresistable to the Tin worms which after 3 hours will have all crawled over to it and if you back it out quick enough they won't have had time to go back home to the Jag.

Just a thought

PS ....you could just drive past the shed with the firewall out of a Camira dragging along behind a tractor .....that's pure porn to a Tin Worm.

Guys

Thanks God you're all still alive.

I was starting to think that someone was going around assassinating all DLRA members judging by the lack of activity on this forum. It's been so lonely wandering around the site on my own.......

I'm thinking I should stop by Don's workshop on my way home and check that he's not pinned beneath his new Nissan V8. I haven't heard from him in over a week - most unusual.

Hopefully everyone is out working on their cars!

G'Day Lynchy
Was at Dons the other night and suffice is to say when your motor starts to rattle 3 months ago you should add oil
heh Don. He's ok just a little preocupied changing motors in the work wagon.
Welcome back gog/rev.
Yes Paul I think its just dawning how soon bloody March is and we had all better be busy in the shed. This weekend I'm porting, porting, porting.
Bloody flow bench at work has shit itself so just going to guess.

Heh goggles good to see you have a love interest. Nurse Rachet is used to dealing with mental illness so you two should be happy together :D :D

Chris

Good to hear from you too. Don rang me Friday arvo and gave me the news about the "new, big dollar" engine he got for the blue wagon and having to replace the AFM at almost the cost of the whole motor.

He also tells me that he now has a battered big end to stick on the shelf as an offering to the "Gods of Speed".

For those who don't know Don - he was "testing" one of his fleet of land speed wagon's and window'd the block, he still managed to limp back to his workshop a further 30 ks away running on a cylinder or 2. If you were driving up the freeway from the Gold Coast to Brisbane a few weeks ago and ran into a massive cloud of oil smoke or ran over a conrod, Don's your man!

Congrats on your Bathurst performance as well!! A good Ford day for all!

Some more progress - the fuel cell has been purchased and is now being fitted to the boot as well as the battery box, sheet metal work is also underway. More work going on this weekend with maybe some pics next week.

As you are all aware, Big Gaz is in Sydney and I am in Brisbane. I get more time than the big fella to do the updates and am more IT aware (I am an IT Manager). I'd love to be back down in Sydney working on the heap and maybe that will change in the future.

I've actually been working on a 1:18th model of the Shaguar and it is taking shape. So far I've stripped it and lowered the suspension / tubbed it. I've managed to locate a set of wheels the same as will be on the real thing and I've started on the roof chop - It might actually look something like the original. This is my first model project and I can tell you that roof chops on diecast models are just as hard as on the real thing......
Following the chop will be finding a blown injected motor (I think I've found one) and a respray..... Photo's to come when it is more presentable.

Das model

Post by Reverend Hedgash »

Good one with the model!

I turned up on dad's old wood lathe a 1:5 replica of our Belly tank, then cut it down the middle and had a friend vac form it. We then made about 6 shells to test ideas which came in very handy in the early stages of roughing out ideas.

They have been sitting around for the last two years and I finally clicked to give a shell to a keen modeller to make. So I contacted a UK modelling website, put a free 1:5 bellytank shell up for offer and got a bloke from down here in Oz put his hand up.

I've sent him photos, plans etc of what we are making so it'll be interesting to see if he comes up trumps.

Hell, if its good enough we might even make him an offer to buy it from him!

Here's a photo of the 1:18 scale Jag. The roof has been chopped and the car lowered. However, it needs to come down even further to be correct. Compared to the real car, this one is a monster truck. It needs to come down another 4-5mm to be right.

I spoke with Gaz on Wednesday, he'd taken the day off to visit some speed shops and sort out a few problems. He got prices on 2 x high pressure fuel pumps, a regulator and 12 new injectors capable of spitting methanol into the motor. It seems the car may now be alcohol fuelled...

He sussed out getting the diff assembled as this was on hold till the rear track and rear brakes were worked out, and dyno time was investigated. Gaz is pretty well committed to getting the car down to the lake in 2007!!

Yes, I am definatley on a roll. If I don't get any interruptions (wife, kids etc) this week end should be fruitful. Because I have to buy new injectors I am thinking of going the whole hog and getting methanol ones. They run 1200cc per minute each. I need 12 of the suckers (squirters) and they are cheaper than the petrol ones ONLY $135.00 each! A new computer would enable me to swap fuel/ignition maps at the touch of a button. Too good to be true. The methanol is cheaper than petrol as well. Someone tell me why I shouldn't do it. (Don't ask my wife for input on this one).
