Bonneville - Here we come

Post by Lynchy »

Just got my tickets from Brisbane to LA for August!!! So we're definately going to Bonneville.

Anybody else going?

In our tour group there's Big Gaz, Andy Jenkins and Andy's mate Bill. The Big Knob guys are going as are the Fountain crew. Bob Ellis will be there also.

We're flying into and out of LA and look to be doing a round trip via Vegas. Any recommendations of sights to see or speed shops to visit?

G'day Paul,

I have to be in Az 16th of October so will miss SW again.

Don't be sucked in by swap meet sighns, they are car boot sales/markets (yeah I was very disappointed when I found out :D )

Good site for car events, swap meets etc.
https://toppingevents.com/

Donut Derelicts cruise, Saturday 6-9am Huntington Beach was about the best cruise I went to.
www.donutderelicts.com
Petersen Automotive Museum was a good look.
www.petersen.org
Pomona or Long Beach swaps were good assuming you are there when they are on.
www.pomonaswapmeet.com
I can't remember where but there was a place there with SBC powered rails that were chained to a track so you couldn't prang when you ran (4 abreast). Top speeds were about 75mph on the short track. I can make a call for the info if you were interested.

Google will provide more info.

Have fun,
Rob

Greg

Yeeeees. Definately a study tour for Bob. I was going to spend some time with the SCTA starters as well to further my notes and procedures.....

Does looking at something very closely in Vegas count as study?

I went to Petersons when it first opened and took Larry O'Toole and I have heard the current display is well worth seeing.

NHRA museum @ Pomana.
Isn't Pleasonton (near San Fransisco) a week or 2 after Speedweek?

Probably right Nige,

I remember going there after speed week but it's been a while so may have changed. Wasn't a bad swap meet there either.

Cheers,
Rob

EDIT: Just looked it up, 27-29th August

The south OZ Vincent crew are also heading to Bonneville . We are entered in M/VG 1350cc , and MPS/VG1350cc classes for Speedweek and the BUB meet. Bike was loaded in the container on Friday 28th and is on its way .
Couldnt get any accomadation for speedweek so it will be the bend in the road for us . See you all there!
Can also recomend the NHRA museum in L.A. . visited it in 02 and its worth the trip out there for sure

Thanks Mal - we'll see you out there. I'm not sure how accommodation is panning out for our group although I think Andy has a room for himself so we should all be OK for a shower!

Thanks everyone else for the tips, research on addresses is underway. San Francisco is probably out of the question as far as Pleasanton is concerned and we've all been there a few times already.

The current itinerary is looking like LA for 3 days visiting a few museums and speed shops then up to Vegas via Barstow for Friday night and Sat night, then I93 up to Wendover & Bonneville for Sunday night and Speed Week. Not sure what day we'll come back but we will be heading back into LA to leave the following Monday.

Assuming it's still there, there's a solar energy farm on the way to Barstow. It manifests itself as a bright light that just keeps getting brighter until you get there. Hundreds of mirrors focused on a collector in a tower.

Lots of factory outlets at Barstow, cheap Levis and the like.

I-93 is the way I went in '98 though I came up from Bullhead City and it was a great drive scenery wise.

Don't pull up and take a leak on the side of the road, a mate got a free night's accomodation for that little party trick.

Cheers,
Rob

No wee breaks on the side of the road.... what would Willy Mason do??? That's just un Australian!

Thanks for the tip on jeans. I used to go to San Jose a bit and the outlets were at a town called Gilroy (also the garlic growing capital of the area). It was also home to a trailer park.... boy howdy!
