New SpeedWeek Event - Upington Airport - 28 to 30 Apr 2013

Received this on the 20th

Fellow SpeedWeekers

Due to the success of the Kalahari Desert SpeedWeek, many of our club members asked us if we could also arrange a tar SpeedWeek as an additional annual event. It is therefore with great pleasure that we announce the Upington All Tar SpeedWeek at Upington Airport from 28 to 30 April 2013. Many of you may know that the Upington Airport has 2 runways, the first being for the daily air traffic and the second [very long] one for really big cargo planes and the space huttle. It was partly funded by NASA as a backup landing strip should the shuttle blow off course. It measures an impressive 5.5km and is the longest runway in the southern hemisphere.

So after many months of negotiations, ACSA finally approved our application and we can now offer it to you, our club members, for 3 glorious days.Timing photos will be done at the 4km mark with a 1.5km runoff.

Due to the cost of renting the runway and facilities for 3 days, the following applies:

It will cost R3500 ($372AU) for each vehicle entered (includes 2013 club fees for all 2013 events)
Each vehicle will get 4 runs
Entries are limited so don't delay
Medical and fire support will be provided by the airport staff
There is no limit on spectators so bring the family
We can unfortunately not provide accommodation at this stage as no tents or caravans are allowed on the airport grounds
We are negotiating with Protea Hotels for discounted rooms which may make accommodation costs and arrangements a lot easier in the near future
A single marquee tent will be erected as the welcome centre with food and drinks being served from there.
