El Mirage race reports after 3 events.

Well it’s time for my latest race reports for El Mirage and the new Velocity Racing Turbo powered sidecar Bob Moreland and I built.

For starters the bike is an early Suzuki Hayabusa that has been raced By Bob as a sidecar and two-wheeler since 2002, Bob built the bike and ran it several times capturing many records in the NA (normally aspirated) classes along with the fuel (nitrous) classes at the dry lake beds of El Mirage Ca and the salt flats of Bonneville Utah.

In 2006 Bob Moreland (owner of Bobs Garage in Vista Ca 760-510-1628) and I spoke about attempting to do what no one had ever done at El Mirage and that was to win the points championship for the car and motorcycle classes as a team. Bob, Richard Lux and his team went on to build a 27 rear engine modified roadster and at the same time we updated the proven sidecar chassis with new wheels, engine, front end, Turbo system (thanks to Velocity racing), wiring harness and many other parts (paint is coming soon for both vehicles)

El Mirage is different than the three SCTA sanctioned time trials at the famed and historic Bonneville salt flats, at El Mirage we have been accustomed to only one run per during a one day meet and with this years new SCTA president and other changes we are now able to run 3 passes if needed/desired. A big thank you to the people that made this possible and also to the many volunteers.

Here are a few current pictures of the sidecar and the components that are the make up of the world’s fastest piston powered record holding sidecar. We installed a the most recent version of CNC Bob’s CNC ported head from www.carpenterracing.com , the newer head porting has picked up several HP from earlier versions and was supplied with Bob Carpenter’s custom made Hayabusa valve springs.



The engine is fitted with a HD output shaft from www.robinsonindustriesinc.com and attached to it I have a set of TTS overdrive gears from http://www.tts-performance.co.uk/which allow the custom Velocity Turbo made turbo system to throw max boost in top gear to allow the rear tire to grab the much needed traction at the faster speeds the system is capable of producing. The last time I dynoed a Velocity system race system in competition it set the world record for measured horsepower at the HP shootout at the Queen Mary during the West-Coast HP shootout sponsored by Jardine exhaust systems with 545 rear wheel HP and on the next run it backed it up with a stellar run of 538 hp.

Driving the bike forward is a Billet clutch basket from Falicon http://www.faliconcranks.com/ (speak with Glenn) which gives Bob and I the peace of mind that we will not succumb to an exploding clutch basket like many others have experienced with OEM parts.

The bike was fitted with a tiger-tail and chain guard from http://www.tigerracingproducts.com/ to keep dirt away from the electronics and also to allow the bike to be lowered so that the rear tire will not rub against the OEM fender assembly, Guy the owner of Tiger racing is the owner of the worlds fastest record holding Nitrous motorcycle at over 228 mph!

Millennium Technologies http://www.mt-llc.com is on hand for the needed cylinder stripping-boring and replating to take the bike from the current engine class size of 1350cc up to the 1650cc class that we will run on September 16th for the fourth race/time trial of the season at El Mirage.

So far this season the Noonan Moreland sidecar has only made three passes during the three event’s of the SCTA/El Mirage season and all with great safe runs and also the records we all seek.

In May while riding the Velocity Turbo fitted sidecar we ran a record setting speed of over 187 mph, this record was the fastest official record for a sidecar motorcycle and we (Bob and I) knew their was more in it as we had measured a top speed on GPS of over 194mph!

In June we then ran the Fuel class in SC-BF 1350 to a new record also a tad more than 187 mph however we were expecting to run about 194+ mph and found that the rear tire was not able to hook up and also that the newly added front brakes were dragging badly, still happy for a great run we saw that the points championship gap was not getting larger between the sidecar and the number two & three bikes. So for the hot July meet Bob and I discussed what minor chassis, body and power changes we would make for the very hot July meet and we settled on three changes, 1.raise the front of the bike for better weight transfer on the drive tire, 2.install better bodywork for improved streamlining and 3.turn the boost up a few pounds for the hotter temps we would be running in July.

Bob and I were hopeful that the sidecar would run about 200mph with a good launch and a little more power than the previous two meets, running second off the line with Bob setting yet another record in front of me (also the third of the season for Bob) in the roadster over 168 mph, we then took off on the sidecar and we forgot to turn the GPS on and proceeded to take off and hit all of the shift points and the sidecar was hooked up and running perfect. At the conclusion of the run we were rewarded with a new record in the class of 216.056 mph!!

This would make the Noonan/Moreland sidecar the first to officially record a record over 200 mph

Currently the Moreland-Noonan-Lux car sits at the top of the points for the first three races of the season and is ahead of the points chase not only for the car point’s

championship but also for the overall points!

The Noonan Moreland sidecar is in second place overall and is sitting in first place for the motorcycle points runners, so the two team vehicles are currently running 1&2 overall and we look forward to the cooler September meet after running in the measured 110 degree heat in July.
