There already is a class for that if you want to make a few mods. The engine is a JFS100, these are actually starter motors for the F4 Phanton and originally have an output shaft and produce 100 hp. The engine weighs about 23kgs, so the total weight would be under 500kg. The class would be gas turbine under 500kg. Mind you I think it would be a bit of a handfull on the salt as the fellow with the superkart said last year.

Does it actually drive the wheels or is it just thrust?

I looked but couldn't see a connection between it and the axle.

Yep you are rigth it had been converted to thrust only, but should just need the afterburner removed and the power turbine and gearbox reattached.
Here is another kart, same engine but still with the gearbox driving the rear wheels and smoking a 360 Ferrari....

One of these engines is for sale in Melbourne if anyone is interested.
