I just gave this a whirl while getting my tyres changed on the car. I am now the proud owner of a ~30-40kg bucket of lead weights which I got for free :) They had a bucket already I just needed to bring my own to take it away. I think the trick is to ask at a big place where the guys doing the work aren't the one's seeing the money coming back from the recyclers. It probably helps to be a paying customer too ;)

BTW - I will be using it to weight down the front wheel.
