that crazy bloody cyclist guy...

Post by boyracer »

ok you guys, lets get serious. have downloaded forms to join dlra as well as entry form. i would like to have a go at motorpacing on my BICYCLE. I would like some feedback on how to go about this.Im a v practical hands on guy. will the pacecar need to be scrutineered? nomex undies and all? does anyone run a pushcar on lake G? what would i be required to wear? probably looking at 60/80 mph window.dont want to get in the way of/hold up some one whos spent a bloody long time tweaking that last few mph out of an infernal combustion engine(bicycles were around a long time b4 otto cycles though)so v willing to go with the flow on any/all aspects of getting a run/runs. ANY advice welcome but 'specially looking for the tech aspects on pace car/safety gear. has any one had a go at this b4 at lake G? cheers fellow gearheads.

ps. what happens if you scare yourself half to death....twice?

Hi fella,
generally speaking it seems the club is trying to shut down the odd-ball and non-classed entrys . However there may be hope , it would be wrong to suggest that the club doesn't have a sense of humor or respect for the inventive.

Usually the early part of the week is crowded , the very nature of the landspeed thing means engines break though and so as the week goes on it shall we say, becomes less crowded. That is of course if the weather is good , if the weather is bad early you've got some pretty het up people waiting around for a chance to run , there's no agro but most of the people here have got a mountain of money and a ridiculous amount of time wrapped up in something that they get very few chances to use if you know what I mean.By Friday afternoon there are few people left if the weather has been good .

The air is "just right" early in the morning , but for some mid-afternoon is the preferred time.....there aren't really any quiet times of the day.

Your effort would be a talking point for sure but if it "gets in the way" it could also be a focus for some vented frustration .

There is a club meeting early February in Melbourne .I'd suggest you put together a proposal with a explanation of why you should be accepted as an entrant together with why it should be taken seriously , make it brief , you might get lucky , you might not.

Push Car / Support Vehicle requirements;
1. Must be roadworthy and registered
or approved by DLRA as a support vehicle
2. Orange Flashing light
3. Installed UHF Radio
4. Fire Extinguisher
5. Spill Kit
6. All occupants to be registered as support crew and wearing safety vests
7. Must be parked on a tarp at all times when on the salt

In your case your not actually pushing, the car acting as a pacecar, so you would have to demonstrate and provide for any additional safety requirements.
Keep the shiney side up........

thanks doc. iam a recovering former drag addict and circuit racer(10 years now, still go to the meetings), so i know how much is invested, time and money, in your racecars. i will build a powered lsr vehicle one day, but think i have found a niche that floats my boat,so to speak. have many feelers out at moment looking for previous, sanctioned, attempts at aussie cycle lsr. to date, nada. want to set a mark from which to work on... will be volunteering to help out when i arrive(+ 1 other, probably tues pm) cause i know how much is involved in doing this logistically in the middle of nowhere. have been following the dlra exploits for a few years now. when/ where is meeting to be held in melb? how is the salt this year? how many runners in the field so far? does the track degrade with multiple passes? do you groom the salt? cheers, gordon.

ps. when everything is coming your way.... you're in the wrong lane!

Oh no! His name is Gordon! Be afraid guys!

Let's treat this as a serious attempt but if the pace car turns out to be a Renault Clio we string him out for the ants!!!!!!!!

I'd suggest practice runs on the warm up track which gets seriously under utilised and then head across to the timed track.....?

And I'll tell the cops we have no idea why there's a burnt out Clio in the scrub near Iron Knob! Boyracer Gordon, if you're wondering what this is all about just check all the posts by Gordon D. Then you'll understand.

boys,boys,boys...i am NOT gordon d.. what a twat.(thanks to david for that one) jrb and lynchy(is that an xjs?), i will be on the salt in2008 so thought it a quite normal scenario to think of something to race.i will approach the club formally and rob carroll directly. i will be volunteering and im sure to learn a lot.i cant wait to see the machinery and fabrication skills on display and being punished on the lake. 300 mph in a ww2 fuel tank stuffed full of blown keith black? try to explain that to jo blo. we all want the same thing. you all had to start somewhere as a greenhorn. i acknowledge that the forum isnt an official channel, but has certainly sparked some discussion between us all, judging by the amount of hits on the subject. isnt that its role (due to the brevity of available racing/socialising time) to sound out ideas. thanks to all who are willing to give something different a go. oh, and bob, you have to keep taking your meds...as the man said 'DONT DRIVE ANGRY'

Jeez , It wasn't just me......anyway Gordon D ain't gone , he'll be out there lurking , watching what's going on on the forum here, arntcha Gordy  ......as has been seen before ...we'll stagger onto one of his self appointed "areas of expertise" and he won't be able to stop himself posting .

You know , anytime I see that phrase now .."just to see what it'll do" I have a little chuckle , Anyway boyracer ....you probably noticed signing off as Gordon was like wearing a back-pack in Baghdad , it got you noticed.....

Boyracer, yes that is an XJS in Lynchy's avatar. Google DLRA Shaguar and you'll find everything there is to know about Big Gaz's beast courtesy of his PR man Lynchy.
