Ah figure somebody would question that . Its a direction and speed selection device . The alphabet letters are as follows
P = not going anywhere
R = RACE
N = as per P
D = DRAG
2 = forward velocity not so fast
1 = not as fast as 2

Ok now this is another thing I have got involved with . I joined the Bay of Islands vintage railway . They only have around 5 kms track so far , but work is progressing on repairing more .
Last Saturday ,I fulfilled a chldhood dream , I got to ride in the steam loco . And kids were waving just like I did yrs and yrs ago , except the roles are reversed now . Grins ear to ear !

In about 1932 an Aussie called Norman "Wizard" Smith ,attempted to break the world speed record . he tried to do this on the 90 mile beach , here in NZ about 130 kms from where I live in Paihia . Mr Smith reached a speed of 228 mph , however the only record he took was the 10 mile world speed record at an average of 164 mph .
This week , representing the DLRA , an anonymous person ( is it the NZ version of THE STIG pronounced THE STUG ) made an attempt at gawd knows what .

THE 90 MILE BEACH

STUG COMES FROM OVER THERE

STUG WANTS TO GO FAST HERE

AT INCREDIBLE SPEED , LEANING FORWARD AND SIDEWAYS TO STREAMLINE THE WHOLE PROCESS

ON THE VERY PART OF THE BEACH MR SMITH DID HIS THING IN 1932

YEP and Lion Red and Tui and Speights and and and .
Oh yep , you allowed to have that extra drink and drive , limit is .08 blood alcohol thingy . And its still legal to talk and text on mobile phones while driving , well until November , when they are bringing in an $ 80 fine .
Other things bit different . Truck open road speed limit 90 kmh . Buses stop at railway crossings , even if there are no trains coming , they sometimes stop at bus stops too . Never seen a random breath testing , or speed camera vans , dont know if they have them .
