G'Day
Yeah good question, I asked Mark Hadfield last meeting as he has campained the Mustang (another salt animal) for years both with and without moons and he said they did'nt notice a difference.

Moon disc's produced and sold by Dean Moon ( moon eyes company) first produced in the early 50's
I cannot find any data proving this type of wheel covering reduces drag in any way , I suspect they are only hot rod bling

The discs do reduce pumping losses if you look at the rotating wheel in isolation. If you look at the wheel as an integral part of the body work then its roll is dependant on positioning wrt bodywork.

..........pumping losses and also the "smoothing" of the vertical face of the actual rim(that which faces forward)..they definitely have bling value but on wheels with a decent off-set they must have an effect on cleaning up flow simply because the surface area of the wheel is reduced.Later production car wheel wells and arches may not be the ideal environment to assess the effect as opposed to open wheelers .Actual track experience could be an indication that the car in consideration ( Mark Hadfield's 'Tang was mentioned) could have aero issues that are an order of magnitude above the advantages offered by discs so in the grand scheme of things they appear to make little difference..........but lots of drops can make an ocean..

Drag racing is all about getting there real fast, i think moonies look killer on my ute, but my race bike wheels are as light as can be, when i had my pro stocker i put in a super light rear wheel and made no other changes to the bike, went .3 second quicker on the next pass, shit loads in drag racing...spinning weight so I put the moonies on the ute and my bike in the back and go real fast...cheers
Don't Worry, It only seems Kinky the first time..
