On the RX1000 the cams have a hollow center; I want to extend a solid rod from the inlet cam through the rocker cover to mount a cam sensor so I can use the sequential fuel and spark features of my new ecu, question if I braze the extension rod to the cam will it effect the hardness of the cam.

Roller car cams are induction hardned on the lobes and journels but the rest of the cam is not that hard. Spose bikes are similar
I'm not the expert on these so if i were you I would call a local bike cam bloke for the definitive answer.

G'day Gary,

Or, you could machine the extension rod for an interference fit in the hollow of the cam and then cross-drill for a roll pin to ensure that there is no slippage.

Thanks all for the good ideas, sadly the whole camshaft is forged and hardened , I can keep the majority of the camshaft cooled so the heat will only effect the very end of the cam shaft. maybe a case of suck it and see what happens. now to decide if I machine the rocker cover for a bronze bush or an oil seal ???

I extended the camshaft nose on my Renault Alpine engine by using the hollow and interference fit with super duper Loctite. It runs the alternator and water pump drive pulley and that was in 1996 and np probs. Might add that after pressing the extension in, it was slightly oversize to allow for truing in the lathe.
