So , yesterday was tank day , we got down to it . We needed to get things so that we could run the motor up to operating temp and check everything over . First we had to get the cooling system tight without the bulk tank ...a commodore radiator with fan and a bit of extra hose sorted that which meant we could see what was going on down and around the gearbox end of things , it also allowed the fumes that were getting out of my super-accurate flanges to get out more easily where we could breathe them , next an air filter can to stop stuff going into the throttle body and finally some way of getting exhaust out of the shed before we all died of CO poisoning.....a bit of 3' water pipe with an elbow on it and a jigsaw made short work of that.If you look out my kitchen window now it looks like the shed is idling
Next we fired it up and went through the gears , turns out my cross pattern shift works in the one of the two ways possible that I hoped it didn't ???....meaning forward/back is first/second and left/right is third/fourth..that's no good and to make matters worse it's not a simple case of swapping the linkages over as they're not symmetrical ,I'll be making them again , that's OK I'll just whip the motor and box out and get right to it.
The Reverend keeps hassling me about why we can't have a sequential ratchet shift , dude there are about fifty billion reasons why it won't work apart from the obvious ones .When he builds his Hot Rod Morris van I'll be ringing him up every night ..." so have you got that ratchet shift working yet ?...what? , oh yeah linkages ? yeah they're a bastard , what it wont shift properly? come on it can't be that hard , no-one's ever had trouble making a gearshift work, piece of cake!! ......"
Today was the meeting at Norm's , great to see everybody .Rod Hadfield had a dead scary runaway trailer story. Fortunately no-one was hurt but it sounds like he might have lost a lot of gear and a new rod body.
...few understand what I'm trying to do , but they vastly outnumber those who understand why..
