TIMING SYSTEM FOR 2011

Post by REAL Stan »

Hi to all

Just a short note to fill in all members with the progress of the timing.
It`s with great relief to say we are going ahead with a new TAG HEUER
wireless system for 2011.We will be having a test run of the system at
XMAS time. There have been a few of us working on this for the past 4 months & this is the best way to go as we all see it.After the 2010
speed-week it was very clear we had to do something.
There will be the costing at the october meeting in Melb, and more
info there.

Cool so no more wires to lay out or service costs or dose the new system need to be serviced each year like the old one?

Thanx
Dave

Good stuff Stan,

A test run as in a demo or a test run as in we buy it and hope it works for our purposes?

Cheers,
Rob

Hay Rob
It`s test to show us it works,& i think it`s 50% first payment
& the other 50% at the end of speed week 2011 once proven.
I think that's how it`s working..
It will all be explained at the October meeting..

Thanks Stan,

I'll be out of the country in October or I'd be there for sure.

Cheers,
Rob

So will the timing van get to live in the pits now? Does it come with display boards for the speed achieved for the current run?

Sorry Paul that won`t happen it`s hard enough just with camera crew at the van.so it will be staying were it is with the same rules. :(
The timing van & or timer must have full control of the track for safety.
It`s very had to hear radio communication when there are 5 or 6 people
all talking and we got the final say to send the next car/bike down the track.

Stan

I was thinking along the lines that if you did position it at the pits you'd have to have an exclusion zone around it to stop people banging on the door to find out how fast the last guy was....

Perhaps in a year or two when all the current enhancements are working well and people are looking around for other things to make Speedweek even better, maybe someone will come up with a computerised system that publishes speeds for every run. Then people could either log in remotely and check anything they wanted or go to a centralised display screen to check. In fact, I'd be very surprised if the new TAG Heuer timing system didn't have that capability already.

If the display was in the pits and well away from the timing van Stan and Cookey and everyone involved with timing could do their jobs undisturbed.

And while we're talking about enhancing our efficiency with electronics maybe we should look around for some simple system that transmits a signal to the starters and the timing van when the car/bike has cleared the course. It need be no more complicated than a signal reader at a safe point on the return road that recorded when a vehicle passed by, perhaps something like the systems kart and circuit racers use. This would reduce the need for radio communication for every run unless there was a problem. A more sophisticated version that included instantaneous GPS coordinates for every car might also be handy for finding those cars that just keep going and get lost down past the end of the long course. If the tow car had a GPS they could go straight to the coordinates of the lost car and get it out of the way quicker. Just a thought.

Cheers

The TAG Heuer system is expandable to almost anything your little heart desires but it all costs money
Remote displays and the like have been investigated and are available but at considerable cost.
The system being bought at the moment will exhaust a considerable amount of club funds so the nice to have add ons may come latter.
No doubt, in the fullness of time, club members will be advised of the cost of the new system and then, after a few more meetings, and finances are recouped, we may be able to add to the new system.
Cheers,
Trevor

Stan / Trev

I'm sure it will be a great leap forward. It's good to see improvements happening.
