Lake Omeo - any news?

Post by project100 »

Just wondering if there is any news regarding Lake Omeo.
I nearly had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met.

I have been too busy to check it out but have plans once i'm finished harvesting,
probably give it some time to dry out ... don't think there are many dry lakes on this side of the country ...

Well with our receival centres closed for Australia day i had the chance to go for a ride, Kim also was free, and we took a leasurely ride  over the new Falls to Anglers rest road and on up to Benambra

The lake has lots of potential, but needs prep, from what i can tell the surface is a hard clay in the most part ,some was under water at the moment and we gave that a wide berth, the shallow end where the benambra air strip is has a silty layer that is too soft and would chop up quickly accellerating , but would do for the braking /runoff area
i think it would need grading ,wetting & rolling for a usable surface, and probably have to treat it like they do at El Mirage and have a large area prepared but only use 1/2 at a time changing at lunch break

Issues that could complicate include potential dust prob for the town as its right on the lake edge ,noise which may not be that bad if we run from the far end toward the town end

rather than a new area we could look at it as extending the airstrip and keep enviromental concerns to a minimum

Good work Greg and Kim, thanks for the effort.

Anyone got a grader?
...few understand what I'm trying to do , but they vastly outnumber those who understand why..

Hi All,

Given that blokes I know were planning to shoot up there for duck opening I'd say it has water in it at the moment like everything else. I have a few contacts up there through the gun club.

It was dry for a long time but a few weeks ago it apparently had about a metre of water in it. I'll find out more in a few weeks.

Great news about Lake Omeo. Thanks to the members who put in the time to get things rolling.

An excerpt from the latest DLRA newsletter.

5 members met at Lake Omeo to get plans in place, but
in the previous three weeks 7 inches of rain had fallen
and 2 inches the night before we arrived so the lake
had water on it for the first time in ten years.
However, much was achieved, the use of the
football ground for camping (Omeo is only 18km
away and has accommodation for hundreds of
people). The use of the kitchen facilities have been
assured, the bar has a licence in place to allow them
to open it up to us, the Lake Committee (who are so
keen to get us there, have already put an article
stating our intentions in the Bairnsdale Newspaper).
They will arrange the local fire and medical people to
be available, the Councillor we spoke with assured
us road closure, crowd control, signage and track
preparation will be taken care of. We have sent off a
letter requesting confirmation of our requirements,
track layout and any concerns they may have. I must
admit, never has something been so straightforward
so far. There are 4.9km of usable surface, a viewing
bank along one side of the track and a landing strip
for fly-ins. If looking it up on the map the small town
on Benambra is on the Lakes edge, fuel, a hotel and
a general store is all it consists of, we also have
approval in principal for our public risk and volunteer
insurance. The surface is at present fully grassed
which will be slashed very low a couple of times,
there are several wheel tracks which will need to be
filled and we have asked for the surface to be rolled,
the long grass along each side will help drivers, turnouts
will be to the left unlike lake Gairdner which are
to the right. I think it has great potential and
compared to El Mirage it is much longer, better
facilities and there shouldn’t be as big a dust
problem.

Wow,

Sometimes in life you can come up with a win/win situation.

With that attitude from the locals I'm sure all our members will be happy as hell to spend lots of bucks locally to keep the event coming back each time.

Can't wait to try and run 200 on wet grass.
