Mickey Thompson challenger 3 & Craig Breedlove.

Post by nitro-nige »

A while back someone gave me a stack of 1960's Hot Rod Magazines.
These 2 cars were featured in one of them.
Don't know if either car ever ran.

Nige, both cars did run but not much. The Mickey Thompson car, which had two engines- a normally aspirated 427 Ford Cammer driving the front wheels and a supercharged Cammer driving the rears, only ever set a one way speed over 400mph before being put away. Mickey's son still has the car and says he might get it out again one day.

Craig Breedlove's car ran with rocket power at various US drag strips for a while but according to my collection of old Hot Rod magazines, never made the salt.

Cheers

I thought Breedloves rocket car was a different one to this.
According to the magazine he was going to run supercharged chevy V8's.
Of course that's not to say they didn't change the car later.

Breedlove had another rocket project that was, I think, never built. That was the really long one that was to run on the same technology that Rosco McGlashan is now building. If you haven't done so already, get on his monthly email newsletter via his website. I'm sure you can find it. But I digress.

Breedlove's long rocket car design evolved into the jet car project of 1997. When I get a chance I'll try to find all these articles for you. I have almost every issue of Hot Rod from 1969 to 1989 and I put all the LSR stuff safely to one side so I might have a chance. Lots of stuff about him, Arfons and Gabelich over the years. Probably explains why I don't have a problem with thrust powered LSR.

Cheers

I found some stuff on the web today.
I think Danny Thompson is going to run the challenger car this year.
