Timing distance?

Postby kermitracing » Fri Mar 30, 2012 4:53 pm

Hi All, Paul from Tassie, Just want to get it clear in my head about the timing distance. Iam hoping to run on the long track for a 200 + speed and i need to know what distance is the timing over. Is it 3 miles or 1 mile. The reason for this question is I am runnig nitrous on my bike and the bottle will last approx. 18 seconds which is fine for a 1 mile but way short for 3. Would appreciate some clarification.
Cheers Paul

Paul,
As a former timer all I can advise is that the course was set out with a 2 mile run up to the first speed trap which recorded over a flying ¼ mile then the next speed timer was at the 3 mile mark and this theoretically gave you a flying mile speed.
We then record speeds through the subsequent mile marks up to the 5 mile and you will need to take into consideration how well your bike or car can accelerate prior to needing the NOS boost in order to punch through the speed barrier.
Just remember that traction on the salt is no where near what you can get on tarmac.
Some of our bike racers will more than likely make my comments look like bullshit.

So with the new TAG Heuer timing gear, will the timing be done in the same manner?
For the slower vehicles that do not run the full length, can we get timed from the 2-2 1/4 and the 2-3 mile marks?

Timing distances will be the same, so as to keep everything correct for records. Vehicles running under 175mph will be timed between two & two & a quarter miles. No further. Pete. DLRA #6.

Hi Cookey, Thanks for the clarification. Seems I will need to bring in the nos ealier than expected and run longer than expected. Quite aware of traction issues just wasn't sure how long the timed section was.

Hi Paul,

My experience with Nos on the salt is regardless of the maths on HP per pound etc check your bottle weight after every run.
In found you use more than you expect or calculate and its easy to run out.
