Class for side indian side valve vintage gasoline 650
Hi there I'm new so the silly questioners start,, even though I've read the rule book, I'd like some clarification
I plan to enter a vintage bike next year ,,, I've been out twice now to the meets and I'm keen to get on the track,, preferably with a bike that can have decent crack at a record
And we are starting to prep an engine soon
But I need to know how the classes work,,if I run in vintage , gasoline ,side valve but modified class in the 650 cc class
Am I then able to run for a lower cc class eg I'm given some sort of benefit because I'm running old stuff
How much in term of engine mods can this class allow,,, I'm happy to have any info that will help me on my way to getting out there next year,,,but I don't want to aim at something only to find out I can't be competitive in a particular class because I've prepped the motor to some other standard

Being a flat head you are given a 33 1/3 percent discount which will put fit you in 500 class
and after checking the record book. you will be M/VG 500 which is an open record...
Hey Mossy .. correct me if I 'm wrong..

7.J.10 Class VG and VF:
Same as Class G or F, except that the class is limited to motorcycle engines produced prior to 1956.
For reasons of historical authenticity, vintage engine modifications are restricted to older technology
levels as far as practical. Accordingly, in classes VF, VG, VBF and VBG newer technologies such as EFI,
or electronic reactive ignition systems are not in keeping with the spirit of the Vintage classes and are not
allowed. Computers are allowed for data collection purposes only.
Engines shall utilize OEM crankcase, OEM cylinders on flatheads and two strokes and OEM heads on
OHV engines. Above components made after 1955 and exact reproductions may be considered legal in
Vintage classes if they offer no competitive advantage. Pre installation approval by the contest board is
required. It is the entrant’s responsibility to provide documentation and samples. A .050 in. overbore is
allowed on vintage engines only (including production vintage) and will be discounted when the bore size
is measured.
Flathead engine displacement will be discounted 33 1/3% in determining engine displacement class
limits. For example, a 1500cc measured displacement would run as a 1000cc.
216 is 33.3% of 650
Looks like M/VG 500 to me Ross

M/VG, mmmm very good,
First Australian to ride a motorcycle over 200mph at Bonneville,,,
Re: Class for side indian side valve vintage gasoline 650
The best sounding bike on the salt this year was a side valve IMHO.
Someone told me what it was but I have a chooks memory.
It was a sweet sound.

Re: Class for side indian side valve vintage gasoline 650
hi there i thank you for the replies
and i understand,,,
in keeping with the vintage spirit/ theme,,,, and engine mods are confined to older tech???,,,,what does this mean exactley?
is it possible to use a more modern carby or not??,, i could put a 2013 mikuni on,,, carbs are not mentioned!
so what i could have is a 650cc ,,, sidevalve/flathead with a modern carb
or the same without a modern carb???
that would be run against the 500cc class
many thanks for the replies

Late model carburator is fine..
mechanical fuel injection is fine....
NO .... electronic fuel injection .... NO .....electronic ignition....

Hi there in regard to ignition
Do I have to run standard distributor with contact points or can I run a joe hunt type magneto instead
Not electronic but certainly vintage after fit

G'day Rob
Everyone seems to have answered your questions already so I'll just say hello.
Be good to have another Vintage class bike running.
Cheers Mossy

So what exactly is a "Reactive Discharge Ignition "?? There is a lot of discussion on this here
http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.p ... 585.0.html
Maybe the DLRA need to clarify this with the SCTA rules committee before electronic ignitions are banned in vintage class.
regards Mal

Re: Class for side indian side valve vintage gasoline 650
Sorry my mistake Mal
I was informed last night of what "REACTIVE DISCHARGE IGNITION " meant..but had not got round to posting..
It basically means that the ignition is not to be able to react with other engine sensors..
ie .. throttle positioning sensors .. knock sensors... exaust sensors
So in saying that .. electronic ignition systems are fine.. as long as they are kept in side there own loop..

Re: Class for side indian side valve vintage gasoline 650
OK Thanks for clearing that up Ross . I think its a fair rule in the context you describe , no external sensors to change ignition timing.

Hi there folks
So i can use an electronic pointless system as long as its confined to its own circuit and has no influence on timing adjustment or other sensors for engine adjustment?..

Hi there
In regard to cc and class and
Bore and stroke changes
I presume that it's ok to alter / change or manipulate the engine bore and stroke to satisfy the particular class entered into
And therefore I presume I can alter inlet valves and manifolds and carbs to suit those mods..??..?yes
I mean these side valve engines are challenged within the design and do need a little stroking to get them moving
