Another Rookie

Post by JayBee »

G'day All,

Finally time for me to give dry lakes racing a crack.... I've been toying with the idea of taking a bike out to the lake since 09' after hearing a couple of work mates talking it up.
I've had a few ideas for different builds even including scooters but have decided to put a Korean (Hyosung) 650 V-twin together and run it in modified gas to start with. It's cheap and doable and hopefully won't go too fast for a newby like me. I might do a build diary but will definitely be pestering some of you for advice on one or two of the finer points. I've got the 2014 Rule Book and have been studying.

Thanks to Carol for making it easy to join up. I'll be putting in an entry as soon as I'm sure what class I should be in.

Cheers,

welcome. I was rookie for 2013 (in a car) after visiting as a spectator/journo in 2010.

It's rather good fun!

I am looking at starting out this year too. While spectating would be fun, I thought why not put in a little more effort, and am looking at competing in the 50 or 100cc bike categories with an older machine in the modified production class to see what it's all about. I see that there aren't many records in those categories yet, any suggestions of a suitable machine? Are 2 strokes allowed?

Fantastic, hoping to pick up the bike in the next few days. Not quite old enough to be in the vintage category but it had a good reputation for speed for it's size back in the day so should still put on a good show in Feb.

A couple of quick rookie questions:

Grip on the salt - slicks, or any particular tread best for bikes?

Kill-switch lanyards - any good sources? I see plenty made for dirt bikes and jetskis, are all types acceptable?

Steering dampers - definitely needed even on Production or Modified Production bikes which didn't have them to begin with?

Hi mate. Welcome aboard. Tyres on the smaller classes dont seem to be an issue as long as they are of the correct speed rating. Some guys run a slick on the rear with no problems. I run good quality road tyres. Check the build date. 10 year max.
Kill switch lanyards are a problem. Salt gets into EVERYTHING. Ive made my own out of a 2 pin terminal block. Hopefully fool and salt proof.
Steering dampers on the smaller classes, you dont need to spend BIG $$$. Ive got an eBay one that works well. It all depends on how well your bike handles really. I strin line my wheels to check alignment.
If you havnt got a covered dustproof trailer your bike will be very dusty after driving the 160 k of dirt road to get to Lake G. Industrial clingwrap.

Haha, I will keep the clingrap in mind. Will hopefully have the bikes in the back of a van though.
