Re: WA rookie team have a Hudson Terraplane
David just for your information and that of other entrants.
We have Ben Felten attempting a Guinness World Record this year for Blindfold Motorcycle.
Both he and Kevin McGee have entered Speed Week and are free to make as many runs as they want.
But the speed to break the GWR is the average of 2 runs in opposite directions.
There have been several strategies developed to enable Ben to do this whilst causing the least inconvenience to other entrants.
And Track 2 on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning seems to be the best option so far.
So if as in other years the numbers drop off on track 2 on Thursday it will be closed for Ben's use as agreed at the committee meeting last Monday night. With the record attempt more likely being first thing Friday morning.
As always things can change with the best made plans and this is all depending upon getting a full number of runs on each of the previous days of Speed Week. There are plenty of things that can stuff this up, that word that starts with "r" and ends in "ain", to much wind, an accident or number of incidents etc, etc.

Re: WA rookie team have a Hudson Terraplane
Thanks Greg,
We can make that happen, even the two way runs. We will do whatever it takes to give Ben a real shot at the record.
Cheers

Re: WA rookie team have a Hudson Terraplane
Well, we made it and the Hudson performed well. Its been a couple weeks since the event, sorry for not posting something sooner. I have to say a massive thank you to all the people who helped us get there and also the massive effort all the guys of the DLRA put in to run such an awesome and remote event. We all had a great time and we met a great bunch of like minded fools we look forward to seeing again next year.
The Hudson mostly passed tech inspection straight up. We were speed limited to 150mph due to some concern with our door latches on suicide doors, and rightly so. So we will be upgrading those for next year. There was a couple other minor things but all in all we did a reasonable enough job on the car. 150mph is really all we were aiming to achieve with a new car and thats exactly what we did before we managed to melt a couple of pistons. It would appear our fuel system let us down and the motor leaned out on our 4th run. Ill post pictures later of the carnage.
So yes, we achieved 3 125MPH licencing runs, one each, we sent the old guy John first on the guinea pig run, so when it came time to try the for the next 150mph licencing run John was at the wheel again. Unfortunately that was to be its last run for the event, that ended in quite a large amount of smoke and all the emergency crews were on scene before the Terraplane had even come to a halt. Cheers guys. Thankfully smoke was all it was and well live to fight again another day, we just need to find a new motor.
As a little bonus we also received the race directors pick trophy. Cheers for that!!
Work has already started on the Terraplane again, purchases have already been made. We are planing our next move for the drive line, rectifying our tech inspection issues and planning some aerodynamic enhancements for speed week 2018.
And for anyone interested this is a great video thanks to Rev Rat that the Terraplane can be seen doing its thing in and also gives you a bit of an idea of the event. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyGPOHtVkPw&t=19s

Re: WA rookie team have a Hudson Terraplane
Well, We had a little bit of carnage as expected, got real hot that's for sure. You can see why the compression was down in cylinder 3 and 4. There's not many sports where you hold the throttle wide open as long as this salt racing, so i guess we learnt a bit more here. We need to pay more attention to the fuel system. The temps just keep building and building if it aint quite right.
On a positive note all the oiling system worries seemed to have been rectified with our last minute modifications, there was no evidence of oil starvation at all.
So we've thrown this motor clean over our shoulders and into the boat anchor section and a new build is in progress.

Re: WA rookie team have a Hudson Terraplane
Yep, no point stopping now.
The parts hunt continues, may as well try to build it for 200mph
We managed to find some near new goodyear land speed tires off an old blue E type jag for the front end. Some of you may have seen that car around. Having all sorts of trouble trying to find some 16" rear landspeed treads. Mickey Thompson make one but i just cant seem to get through to anyone in the land speed department. If anyone has a contact number send it through to me in a private message. Were stuck with a minimum diameter of 16" due to our IRS rear end. If we want to go to 15", the more common size, well need a whole rear axle change to a 4 link or something. So we'll continue to look into the MT's.
We sourced a new trans, our old T56 six speed had some miles on it and we weren't too confident it would hold up to our new motor plan. So after much head scratching we decided to go for an old 3 speed CS1 Lenco, air shifter and all. Still need to sort out a clutch and bellhousing to the small block chev. so again if anyone has some parts kicking around let us know.
As we found out on the salt the old Terraplane was popular due to it uniqueness and John's black paint. So thanks is given to all the guys who have made videos and printed the old Hudson in ink.
Well be displaying the terraplane at the upcoming WA hot rod show in perth along with a few other of the DLRA members machines. Well be there to chew the fat and i've had a little batch of team shirts and stubby holders made up to sell. If were not next to the Terraplane you'll find us at the bar. Cheers

Re: WA rookie team have a Hudson Terraplane
Had some progress finding land speed tyres, So, I thought I would share what i've found. Goodyear eagle land speed tyres can be found easy enough through summit racing. No 16" ones however. So Big Knob gave me a lead on Mickey Thompson's who have 4 different sizes one being a 16" and a couple of 18" options. As can be seen on Norms car. So here's the MT list, prices in USD and the man to speak to. Another thing to be aware of is there is a contract/waiver that goes with them.

That looks a little like a Pro Stock style deal....
