This part of the forum is exclusively for Australian Land Speed Racing history.

I am now a member of the Society of Land Speed Racing Historians and their goal is to record the rich history and heritage of hot rodding and land speed racing from around the beginnings of the automotive age, 1890 to the present day.
The purpose of this historical group is to preserve the history and heritage of land speed and dry lakes racing, to promote the hot rodding culture, to work towards a permanent repository where artifacts can be safely kept and restored for future generations and to encourage historians, photographers and others to publish their books and photographs.

What the SLSRH would like me to do is to have each and every member start out by recording and saving their memoirs. Once they have saved their history, to look for older Australian land speed racers and hot rodders and record their lives. Then record those who have passed away. As I/we do that, make sure to scan old photographs and create full and complete captions for all that you know. Save old memorabilia and keep a provenance or history of the artifact, such as trophies, plaques, cars, parts, etc.

To this end we already have a solid foundation for DLRA members to record their history with each member having their own profile page. All you have to do is send me your text and photos and it will be posted to your own page, plus I've previously created some pages about History of Land Speed Racing.

I know there is a wealth of information and history out there and I look forward to documenting some of it here.

Russell Wright also lives up the coast a bit. It would be good to get him down for a meeting sometime as well.

Hey Lynchy, Russel Wright was with us on the salt in 06 ,Terry Prince and stuart Penn were flying the Vincent flag that year , I think he really enjoyed being amongst all the speed people . He was a bit blown away that John Noonan and Sam Wheeler wanted "HIS" autograph !! A modest man and a living legend !!

Mal

Yep, I met him. He's not that modest. He came over to see what we were up to while I was helping untangle the timing wire and asked if he looked like one of the world's fastest men on a motorbike!

Very nice bloke though, we had a great chat. It was one of those moments you'd love to go back to knowing more about the person beforehand. I was not expecting a former outright land speed record holder to just wander up and say G'day, even at Speedweek. It sort of threw me off balance. Having said that we also got to meet Noonan and Sam Wheeler and Keith Turk and the Amo boys.

I got Noonan to sign my Top 1 shirt on the start line just before his 200+ mph run. I just wish I'd got Sam Wheeler and Russell Wright's on the same shirt!!!!
