1986 VL Commodore

Post by DLRA »

On behalf of Max Ellery
1986 VL Commodore has been set up to DLRA “Production class and GCC class with the nose cone” which allows vehicles and body panels that have been “homologated” production runs of a minimum 500, similar to Bathurst cars. HDT body skirts and front bumper were fitted to help air flow and vehicle stability. The car is painted Ford Falcon Citric Acid. Roof rails 20mm aluminum right angle strips and front and rear window support strips of 20mm aluminum flat strips must be fitted to classes with a record of over 175mph. Some of the interior trim remains installed (internal door trim and roof lining) as per PRO DLRA regulations, this can be removed easily.

Steve Kaitler, Benella, installed a 6 point Moli steel roll cage that meet with DLRA and CAMS requirements. Steel webbing installed between the cage and “A” and “B” pillars, designed to give the vehicle much more strength. The seat is a Monaco Cobra race seat with DLRA approval for a composite seat. “DLRA # 510 Has applied for, and has been granted approval to use a “composite” seat as per ruling 3.D.1”

A very reliable and powerfull V8 engine, built by Clint Curran of Pro-Stroke. Clint spent many hours working on the engine, the crankshaft came in for special treatment, the block was tested for any irregulars then cleaned up to make sure the engine oil flowed freely. Crankshaft is de-stroked to retain a cubic inch displacement of 257ci. Fully balanced crankshaft with counter weights knifed to eliminate drag. A set of JE forged pistons was installed, these pistons had to take the punishment of high rpm and raise the compression ratio, giving extra horsepower. A set of DASH aluminum heads, hand modified and flow tested. Hand made tuned extractors. The carburetor is a Holley 650cfm double pumper bolted to a Torquer single plane intake manifold, a T & N velocity stack is installed to catch the bugs. Engine ignition is an MSD adjustable digitized unit. “MSD Digital-7 Plus Ignition Control (PN 7520)”. An oil scavenger plate installed. Oil drain braded hose at the rear of each head to drain oil back to the sump quickly. Further information on the engine can be obtained from myself and the engine builder.

Modified 4 speed transmission, with extra oil feed.

The car has 4 wheel disc brakes. Fully adjustable front struts, therefore the cars height can be altered from its lowest point with the front Walkenshaw air dam at ground level to a height of several centimeters for trailer loading. King springs have been fitted plus extra springs at different tensions. Group A “Z” bars -Links have been installed.
Rear suspension has tempered lowered springs, new adjustable Pedder anti sway link. New Pedder competition shock absorbers. The front and rear suspension has a selection of “Kings” springs. Pedder Shock absorbers and suspension setup, a documented suspension report is included.
The rear differential assembly is a V8 disc brake diff with a 3.08 ration, included are other ratio crown and pinion gears (2.78, 4.11).

Tyres are VR and ZR rated tyres with a rating of upto 200 MPH (390 KPH), there are extra race tyres.

Greg Telford DLRA Events Co-Ordinator has some recent knowledge of the car and is prepared to give an unbiased opinion on the car if contacted.
This is a $60,000 car and race ready and can be modified to run at Winton, sprints, hill Climbs or Drags.
Many spares also come with the car.
