Poly-V carbide/ceramic grooving inserts?
Quick question -
At some stage in the very near future I have to make up a custom Poly-v pulley
Does anyone know where I can get single Poly-V carbide/ceramic grooving inserts in Australia or online?
This is what I am trying for:
But they are in the UK and only sell 10 at a time (though I am still trying). An alternative would be a single point tool.
This is to match the Rotrex:

No real help but standard thread cutting inserts won't work, UNC, UNF and Metric threads are 60 degrees and the Pommy stuff is 55 degrees.
Shouldn't be too hard to grind up a pice of tool steel, just have to dress the convex radiuses by hand.
Odd pitch spacing, doesn't equal an imperial measurement either.

Thanks - I have since found the Tool Flo also produce a carbide insert http://www.toolflo.com/cats/Automotive.pdf (the one above is NTK).
No response to my email as yet but I will give them a call.
I will hunt for another week and then go down the DIY path. I have some example pulleys now and that will help

Grind up a bit of tool steel to fit the sample pulleys that you have......Made quite a few pulleys both alloy and steel 25 years ago, the belts are really quite tolerant to minor sizing variations......

I got a response from Toolflo and they have pointed me to a local distributor - I'll update the thread next week on the result.

Ah - an I have been pinging JP Afflick has he had the same problem - he hasn't been posting pics here because he couldn't work out how to show facebook images....
well here's how you do it
Use the graph API and construct a link like this (teh API is a different facebook provided website https://graph.facebook.com)
The <picture unique id> is the picture number you see in the standard web address you see at the top of your browser and is AFTER ...?fbid= and BEFORE all the extra bits at the end (i.e. stop when you hit a letter,=,or non-numerical character "&set=np....")
e.g. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... 4559227800[/b][/u]&set=np.255096894.760405549&type=1&theater¬if_t=notify_me
Then add that to an img tag

Here is a pic of homemade pulleys for the micro-V belts.......
They were made to take a 12 row belt, but in the end I used 3 x 4 row belts side by side (just get them from the same batch....read the numbers on the rear of the belts.
The 3 belts lasted better than the single wider belt. It was a GM 2/71 supercharger on top of a Subaru Brumby motor in a drag bike.....8.82 @ 152mph back in '92
Just be sure you engineer a good tensioner roller that gives you plenty of wrap around the pulleys (300 degrees is good if you can get it)

I have just found the final solution (I think). I have just ordered the 6 rib Toolflo insert for $120 from http://www.mapal.com.au/
It is expensive but fortunately expensive enough that they sell them in ones (any cheaper and I would probably have to buy 10 - though I wouldn't). The tool holder was way too expensive though and not suited to my lathe so I am going to have to make that. I will be making at least 4 pulleys to start with and will be integrating one into the flywheel which will be particularly tricky - so $120 is worth it ($5 per groove).
For anyone else finding this thread, I have also found 40 degree tools on eBay in the UK http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... TQ:GB:1123. Pretty cheap (~$10) but the postage is expensive (though you could convince your UK reli's they are great Xmas gifts).
There was also a 40 degree tool at this link but you could only buy 10 at a time and I wasn't sure if the 40 degrees was actually where I wanted it

I have the insert and at the very least I will be using it as a chaser
The only reason I have been quiet on the build diary is that the lathe died Hopefully it is just a simple NVR switch replacement to fix (part on the way).
