Good day DLRA members. Just started building up my Dry Lakes race car, a VU Holden Ute.
So be expecting a lot of questions over time.
Any way first question. Is it acceptable to join steering u joints to 3/4 x .120 DOM tubing by welding (be it Tig or Mig). Looking at the Flaming Rivers site, they say there u joints can be welded.

The DLRA rule book just mentions. Quote: It is recommended that all steering system welds be visually inspected on a frequent basis.
Will be a lot easy to source straight shafting without splines etc.

Re: Welding steering joints
Hi Johno
Welcome aboard.
Would depend on the quality of the weld and prep mainly.
Are the Uni yokes spigoted to the DOM or just butted up?
If building a car I'd be contacting one of the car tech guys and starting to share details pics etc.
That way there's less surprises for everyone at tech inspection.

Re: Welding steering joints
Hi Johno and welcome,
Yes can be done but as Jon says its got to be done right. Contact Bob Ellis and run it by him.
I kind of specialise in the pickup and ute classes so any questions yell out.
Do you know what class you are aiming at?
Chris

Re: Welding steering joints
Thanks for the welcome Jon & Chris
First of looking at running in B/BFALT.
Have only just started on vehicle, will be a 3 year project.
The steering shaft will be fitted into the bore of u joints then tig welded.(the standard holden setup where just butted up to joints and welded)
Will get in contact with Bob Ellis.

Re: Welding steering joints
If that's the case it'd be cheap insurance to drill and pin it post weld.
