Off season shed therapy

Post by gennyshovel »

I've had a festering thought in my noggin for 5 years , or so, to build a V8 500cc engine, but , as usual, dreams get hindered by ability, funds, & need.
So far the problems uncounted were.
#1 - machining a billet crank, & crankcase is way out of my retirement funds
#2 - even if I had the funds, putting side by side conrods in would change the cylinder spacing, rendering the heads useless

Here is a compromise, chop the gearboxes off two Honda MC19 250cc four engines, yeah, it won't be a "true" V8 , more of a deviate
The two engines are coupled by spur gears, borrowed from a couple of Honda XL125 clutch basket drive gears, complete with their dampener system

There are no immediate plans to run it at lake G, but,,,,,

Looks great. What could possibly go wrong?
It would make a great coffe table talking piece if it doesn't work out!

Those straight cut spur gears between the two crankshafts will sound evil. Cant wait to hear this thing run. Firing order 1-8-3-6-7-2-5-4?

Those spur gears are a bit of a worry Charliebrown, considering the revs they will reach,,, :?
Firing order will be 1 + 60 degrees, then 5 - 2 - 6 - 4 - 8 - 3 - 7, the separation between the two cranks can be varied by rotating them before meshing the gears.
Primary gearing reduction will be a challenge, but I'm sure either clutch choices won't hold together at redline without at least a 50 percent reduction in revs, then there's the overall driveline length to consider
I'll be happy to just hear it idle 1st, when the time arrives,,,

looks like its going to be a nightmare to shoehorn that motor, etc into that frame :?

is there any reason why you don't assemble the complete engine package (clutch, gearbox and carbs etc) then wrap a custom frame around it :?:

The frame "had" removable lower frame rails Stayt'ie (it is a 1980 Guzzi V50 unit) , the "big block" Guzzies do not, their block is a stressed member of the frame, I plan on doing the same.
The rear frame section that mounts to the gearbox was cut off to allow me to slide the top section forward to accommodate the longer engine, these will be replaced once the motor / transmission unit is one.
I have been down the new frame construction route a few times, but with this Covid lockdown, my access to a good flat workbench , accurate lathe & someone who's welds you could trust your life on (not mine)

Future road use is a big consideration with the frame, Compromise is what you do, not always what you would like to do.
