4. Tasks

4.1 Set Up

SURVEY MARKERS

The survey markers are a large spike in the salt with a descriptive ribbon attached. These survey markers will have a cone placed beside them for ease of location on both Tracks #1 & #2..

The left side of Track #1 will have survey pegs from 0 to 9 miles.
The right side of the track 1 will only be survey pegged from Mile 2 through to 5th Mile.
The survey pegs will be the same relative location on the left side of Track #1, as the right side of Track #1.

The left side of the Track #2 will have survey pegs from 0 – 4miles & the right side will only have survey pegs at 2 & 3 miles

TRACK MARKERS

Track markers will be black shade cloth 700mm x 700mm mounted on 2 x 25mm x 800mm poles (orange plastic) the bottom of the shade cloth will be a salt level. Both sides of Tracks #1 & #2 will be marked at ¼, ½, ¾ and mile points through the full length of the tracks.
1. On the left side of the Track #1 place a marker with it’s nearest to track pole at survey peg mile 0 (without losing the survey peg), by drilling a 25mm hole vertically, 75mm deep. Place a pole in this hole and then with marker flag in place mark the location of the second pole and drill so flag is firm between the two poles at right angles to the track.
2. Then move to the next survey peg (Mile 1) and place a marker as described above but 1 metre approx. to the south of the survey peg and in line with the inside pole of the previous marker, this is to clear the timing equipment.
3. Now with assistance of another, place markers at ¼, ½, & ¾ mile or approx. 400m apart between these 2 markers, by sighting along the inside posts with the aid of binoculars if required.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 to the Ninth Mile.
5. On the right side of Track #1 with the assistance of another person, use a piece of rope held firmly between the 2 survey pegs at Mile 2, set a knot in the rope to create a measure to use where there are no survey pegs when placing markers on right side of track. (as per steps 1, 2, 3 & 4).
6. Use the above technique lay out the track markers on Track #2.

MILE MARKERS

Mile markers are yellow with black mile number approx. 1m square mounted on 2 x 25mm orange plastic poles. Mile markers are placed on the right side of Track #1, 3m off the edge and in line with the Track Markers so as to clear timing equipment & on the left side of Track #2.
These mile markers are erected the same way as track markers, but may need guy ropes.

Mile markers start at Mile 1 through to Mile 9 inclusive.
NB. Mile marker at Mile 2 ¼ approx 1m square on orange poles, second timing lights.

TIMING LIGHTS

Timing lights and recording / transmitter boxes to be set up by Chief Timer and crew, see Timing Set Up.

ALTERNATE TRACK MARKERS

In the event of Track #1 being "flipped", the markers from the right side of Track #1 are re-laid out to the left side of Track #1 as per point 5 above.

TRACK EXIT MARKERS

Track exit signs are 1m x 2m of orange netting with black word EXIT on them mounted on 2 x 25mm plastic poles, these signs are to be placed approximately 100M after the 3rd mile through to the 9th mile markers, 3 metres from the right side of Track #1, and on the left side of Track #2 after the 1st mile and through to the 4th mile markers.

Exit signs to be erected in the same manner as mile markers.

TRACK CLEARANCE FLAGS

Track clearance flags are placed 150m off the right edge of Track #1 along exit lanes. They are 4m tall blue Bali flags. Drill a 25mm hole vertically, 100mm deep fit flag onto pole then place pole firmly into the hole.

EXIT LANES

Exit lanes are placed approximately 100 metres after the 1/2 mile marker from mile 3 1/2 through to mile 9  1/2. They are marked with orange cones every 100m along a 500m arc, which is best formed by turning off the track at 80 Km/h in a vehicle then using the tyre tracks as a guide to place cones forming a 500m arc to the return road.

RETURN ROAD Track #1

Return road runs parallel with, & 500M to the right of Track #1.

At the end of Track #1 there will be a orange mesh panel errected across the track with the arrows indicating direction to return road.

The Bali flags are erected in the same manner as clearance flags & mesh panel the same as track markers.

RETURN ROAD Track #2

Return road tapers from 500M at 3ml to 200M at the start line, on the left of Track #2.

The return roads are marked with 5m tall orange Bali flags on both tracks 1 & 2.

At the end of Track #2 there will be a orange mesh panel errected across the track with the arrows indicating direction to return road.

The Bali flags are erected in the same manner as clearance flags & mesh panel the same as track markers.

4.2 During the event

The only track work required will be if a marker is destroyed or in the event of a bad surface, Track #1 is "flipped".
